Millthorpe ~ New South Wales
Millthorpe is a lovely heritage-listed village in Central West New South Wales. It is located 240 kilometres north-west of Sydney and 25 kilometres from Orange.
Millthorpe has wonderful heritage buildings, great food and coffee, quaint shops and a fascinating museum.
During our visit, we started the day with Breakfast at Millthorpe Providore, wandered around town, explored the Golden Memories Museum, and admired the Heritage Buildings.
The Millthorpe Providore is located in the historic old Butcher’s Shop in Victoria Street and is open every day until 3.00 pm. It was established in 2014, and its menu features local produce sourced from the Central West region.
We enjoyed a tasty bacon and egg roll and delicious coffee for breakfast. Seating is available inside and outside in the courtyard.
After breakfast, we wandered around Millthorpe's cobbled streets, lined with beautifully preserved 19th-century buildings.Â
These wonderful buildings house fashion boutiques, homeware and gift shops, cafes and specialty stores. There are also lovely art and craft galleries, antique shops, charming accommodation cottages and wine tasting stores around town.Â
An easy 400 metre walk from the town centre is Mill Green, a community garden project, with ornamental and native gardens, a centre lawn area and a picnic bench.
The Golden Memories Museum
The Golden Memories Museum is a large museum that is open from 11:00 am to 3:00 pm, most Wednesdays to Fridays, and every Saturday and Sunday.
The museum features eight buildings filled with interesting and varied exhibits, including local memorabilia, social history, and rural machinery.
There is also one building full of Australian Inventions and information about them, which is very interesting.
Heritage Buildings
Millthorpe was established in the 1860s and was originally called Spring Grove. The town's name was changed to Millthorpe in 1884 after the Great Western Flour Mill was built.Â
Millthorpe Village is now a heritage conservation area with lovely public and commercial buildings and heritage streetscapes that have remained mostly unchanged since the early 1900s. We enjoyed wandering around, admiring the many heritage buildings.
Millthorpe Hotel
The Millthorpe Hotel was built in 1898 and was originally called the Family Hotel. The first beer was poured on 7th September 1898.
In 1913, the hotel was renamed the Railway Hotel, and in 2021 became the Millthorpe Hotel.
Millthorpe Railway Station
In 1877, the railway reached the town, and the current Millthorpe Railway Station building opened in 1886, replacing a smaller building that was built further out of town.
The Millthorpe Railway Station is an architecturally significant building, as it is the only surviving example of a symmetrically designed station with a graceful street verandah in country New South Wales.
NSW Bank Building
In 1887, the Bank of NSW purchased this prominent corner block for a new Bank. In 1902, the impressive Bank of NSW and adjoining manager’s residence were constructed for 2,707 pounds.Â
The Bank closed in 1981, and this building is now used as the Rosebank Art Gallery and a Bed and Breakfast.
Public School
The Public School is a unique bluestone building that was built in 1876 for 1,080 pounds.Â
Grand Western Lodge
The Grand Western Lodge was built in 1901 and is a great example of an Edwardian style pub with its double-storey brick construction, extensive lace verandah and its unique leadlight windows.
School of Arts Building
The School of Arts Building was completed in 1897 and is a Victorian Free Classical Style building, with an interesting symmetrical facade.
Catholic Church
The foundation stone for St Canice’s Catholic Church was laid in June 1903, and the Church was officially opened in 1904. This lovely church seats 200 people and was built for 603 pounds.
St Mark's Anglican Church
The original St Mark’s Anglican Church was built in 1878 and is now used as the Church Hall. The current Gothic-style Church was built in 1909 and is a larger blue stone church that cost 2800 pounds to build.
