Oatlands Tasmania
Oatlands is a charming historic town in Tasmania’s Southern Midlands, best known for its beautifully preserved sandstone buildings and peaceful country atmosphere. Located about 85 kilometres north of Hobart, Oatlands makes a perfect stop on a road trip between Hobart and Launceston, offering visitors a glimpse into Tasmania’s colonial past. With its heritage streetscapes, windmill, and relaxed rural setting, Oatlands invites you to slow down and explore one of the state’s most character-filled country towns.
Many of the sandstone buildings were built by convicts in the early 1800s. They now line the high street of Oatlands and are used as cafes, boutique accommodations, and antique and craft stores.
In the heart of Oatlands stands the beautifully restored Callington Mill, a Lincolnshire Tower Mill built in 1837 and one of the town’s most iconic landmarks. Visitors can wander through the grounds and learn about the mill’s fascinating history, along with the surrounding granary, stables and miller’s cottage, gaining a real sense of life in early colonial Tasmania. Today, the site is also home to the award-winning Callington Mill Distillery, where you can visit the cellar door to sample Tasmanian single malt whisky and gin, enjoy locally sourced food, and learn about the whisky-making process through tastings and immersive experiences.
As you explore the town, you’ll notice an impressive collection of historic sandstone buildings, including the Oatlands Court House, the oldest building in town, dating back to 1829. Adding even more charm are the carefully shaped topiary gardens scattered throughout town, bringing colour and character to Oatlands’ heritage streetscapes.
For a peaceful break, take a stroll along the shores of Lake Dulverton, a shallow and scenic lake just outside town. It’s a popular spot for fishing, birdwatching and camping, and a lovely place to relax and enjoy the quiet beauty of Tasmania’s Southern Midlands.
