Where to Find Secret Falls

Secret Falls is located along the Myrtle Gully Track, behind the historic Cascade Brewery in South Hobart. This area sits at the foothills of Mount Wellington / kunanyi and is known for its cool rainforest gullies, creeks, and cascading waterfalls.

While Myrtle Gully Falls is the better-known destination along this track, Secret Falls remains quietly tucked away — living up to its name.

A Small but Beautiful Cascade

Secret Falls is a single-drop waterfall, falling approximately three metres through a narrow rock crevice. While modest in height, the setting is what makes it special.

Water trickles gently over dark rock, framed by emerald-green moss, tree ferns, and rainforest undergrowth. After rain, the falls flow more strongly, but even in drier conditions, the surrounding forest creates a serene, almost enchanted atmosphere.

Finding the Turn-Off

There is no official signage for Secret Falls, which helps keep it relatively undiscovered. As you walk along the Myrtle Gully Track toward Myrtle Gully Falls, keep an eye out for a clearly worn side track descending toward the creek.

This turn-off is located approximately 50 metres before you reach Myrtle Gully Falls. The short side track leads down to the base of Secret Falls, where you can pause and enjoy the quiet surroundings before returning to the main track. Take care on this section, especially after rain, as the ground can be slippery.

Best Time to Visit

Secret Falls is best visited after rainfall, when the water flow is stronger and the rainforest feels especially alive. Early mornings are particularly peaceful, with filtered light through the canopy and fewer walkers on the track. Because the falls sit within dense forest, they can be enjoyed year-round, even on warmer days when the gully remains cool and shaded.

Getting to the Myrtle Gully Track

From Hobart, take Macquarie Street and Cascade Road toward South Hobart, then turn onto Old Farm Road. Follow Old Farm Road behind the Cascade Brewery for approximately 2.4 kilometres.
