O’Grady’s Falls is a delightful waterfall located partway up kunanyi / Mount Wellington, just a short drive from Hobart. Surrounded by open bushland and cool mountain forest, this gentle cascade is an easy and rewarding stop for anyone exploring the lower slopes of the mountain.
With multiple walking tracks leading to the falls, O’Grady’s Falls is one of the more accessible waterfall walks around Hobart and is well-suited to visitors of all ages and fitness levels.
An Easy and Scenic Walk
There are several ways to reach O’Grady’s Falls. We chose to park at the first car park on the right-hand side of Pinnacle Road while driving up Mount Wellington through Fern Gully.

The walk is mostly flat and easy, passing through open woodland with dappled light filtering through the trees. It’s a pleasant stroll rather than a hike, making it ideal for families, casual walkers, and anyone wanting a relaxed nature break. The return walk takes approximately 40 minutes.
A Mountain Stream at Work
O’Grady’s Falls sits at around 450 metres above sea level, where cool, clear mountain water flows steadily over the rocky ledge before continuing into the Hobart Rivulet. From here, the water winds its way down through South Hobart, beneath the city, and eventually into the Derwent River. While the falls are not large or dramatic, their peaceful setting and mountain backdrop make them a lovely place to pause and enjoy the natural environment.
A Lovely Viewing Spot
A small footbridge crosses the rivulet near the falls, offering the best vantage point to view and photograph O’Grady’s Falls. The surrounding rocks, ferns, and flowing water create a picturesque scene — especially after rainfall, when the cascade is at its best.
Best Time to Visit
O’Grady’s Falls flows year-round but is most impressive after rain. Cooler months bring fewer visitors and lush greenery, while warmer days make this an easy add-on to other Mount Wellington walks or lookouts.
Directions to Mount Wellington / Fern Gully
From Hobart: Head south-east on Murray Street toward Bidencopes Lane. Use the lanes to turn right onto Davey Street (A6) and continue for 1.3 kilometres. Continue straight onto Davey Street (B64) for another 7.2 kilometres. Turn sharp right onto Pillinger Drive (C616). Follow this road for 8.1 kilometres toward Mount Wellington / Fern Gully. Parking is available along Pinnacle Road near the start of the walking tracks.
Final Thoughts
O’Grady’s Falls is a lovely example of how easy it is to enjoy nature around Hobart. With a short, gentle walk, peaceful bushland, and a pretty mountain cascade, it’s a perfect option for a relaxed outing on Mount Wellington.
