Zeehan Tasmania

Explore Zeehan Tasmania

Zeehan is a fascinating former mining town on Tasmania’s rugged West Coast, where wild landscapes meet rich history. Once known as the “Silver City,” Zeehan is now a quiet and character-filled destination surrounded by rainforests, waterfalls and mountain scenery. Located just 40 minutes from Strahan, it makes an ideal base for exploring the west coast’s natural attractions while stepping back in time through heritage buildings, local museums and stories of Tasmania’s mining past.

Today, Zeehan attracts geologists and rock collectors from around the world due to its unique geological structures. It is 180 kilometres from Devonport and 300 kilometres West of Hobart.

Zeehan Things to Do

In the centre of town, the West Coast Heritage Centre has excellent indoor and outdoor displays of the area's pioneering and mining past. It also houses one of the finest collections of minerals in the world.

The West Coast Heritage Centre is the heart of Zeehan’s rich history and a must-visit when exploring the town. Housed in beautifully preserved heritage buildings, the centre brings Zeehan’s mining boom years to life through detailed exhibits, historic machinery, photographs and personal stories from the West Coast’s early days.

Highlights include the grand Gaiety Theatre, once a centre of entertainment during Zeehan’s heyday, and fascinating displays that reveal why the town was known as Tasmania’s “Silver City.” It’s an engaging and informative stop that offers real insight into Zeehan’s past and the people who shaped it.

Zeehan Spray Tunnel

The Spray Tunnel is one of Zeehan’s most quirky and atmospheric attractions, offering a glimpse into the town’s mining and railway past.

This short, easy walk leads through a 100-metre former railway tunnel that once carried ore trains between Zeehan and the coast. Today, the tunnel is dark, cool and often home to glow worms clinging to the damp walls, making it a surprisingly memorable stop.

Located just a few minutes from the centre of Zeehan, the Spray Tunnel is a quick and unique experience that’s well worth adding to your West Coast itinerary — especially if you enjoy unusual history spots with a touch of mystery.

A short drive from Zeehan, you can discover Montezuma Falls, an 8-kilometre walk that will get you to the base of one of the highest waterfalls in Tasmania.

Montezuma Falls is Tasmania's largest single-drop waterfall, with water falling 104 metres to the rocks below. It is located near Rosebery in the Northwest of Tasmania, an area rich in railway and mining history.
