Beauchamp Falls – A Rewarding Rainforest Walk in the Otways

Tucked away in a lush valley of the Great Otway National Park, Beauchamp Falls is a beautiful 25-metre waterfall cascading through a fern-filled gully along Dappeler Creek. Surrounded by towering rainforest trees and dense green undergrowth, this scenic waterfall feels wonderfully secluded and is well worth the walk to reach it.

Visitors can enjoy views from a lookout above the falls or continue down to the base for a closer and more immersive experience.

A Classic Otways Rainforest Setting

The walk to Beauchamp Falls showcases everything the Otways are famous for — ancient Myrtle Beech, towering tree ferns, mossy forest floors and the constant sound of running water. As you descend into the valley, the air becomes cooler and damper, and the forest closes in around the track, creating a peaceful, almost timeless atmosphere. After rain, the waterfall is particularly impressive, with water surging over the rock face and into the pool below.

The Walk to Beauchamp Falls

Distance: 2.5 kilometres return - Time: Around 1 hour - Difficulty: Moderate

The walk begins at the Beauchamp Falls carpark and picnic area. From here, a well-maintained track leads 800 metres downhill through beautiful beech forest and lush tree ferns.

As the track continues, it flattens out and crosses several boardwalks and small bridges, gently winding its way deeper into the gully. A series of steps then leads to a lookout platform, where you can enjoy a lovely view of the waterfall from above.

For those wanting to get closer, another short section of steps descends to the base of the falls, offering a dramatic perspective and the chance to feel the cool spray on your face.

Viewing the Falls – Top or Base?

The lookout provides a wonderful overview of Beauchamp Falls as it plunges into the gully below, framed by ferns and rainforest. However, the walk to the base is highly recommended if you’re able, as it gives you a true sense of the waterfall’s height and the scale of the surrounding forest. Both viewpoints offer excellent photo opportunities, particularly in soft light or after rainfall.

Tips for Visiting Beauchamp Falls

  • Visit after rain for the best water flow

  • Wear sturdy footwear, as steps and tracks can be slippery

  • Allow extra time to enjoy the base of the falls and the forest setting

  • Take care on the return walk, as it is uphill

  • Combine your visit with other nearby Otways walks and waterfalls
