Donaghys Hill, Tasmania - Hike to Stunning Views in Tasmania's Wild West
Just off the Lyell Highway, Donaghys Hill is a wonderful short walk on Tasmania’s wild West Coast, located approximately 47 kilometres east of Queenstown and 35 kilometres west of Derwent Bridge. Often overlooked by travellers speeding through the region, this hidden gem offers one of the most rewarding viewpoints for very little effort.
The walk is a gentle but steady climb through cool temperate rainforest and open alpine scrub, making it an ideal leg-stretcher on a West Coast road trip. As you ascend, the peaceful surroundings and fresh mountain air quickly make you forget the highway below.
At the summit lookout, you’re rewarded with breathtaking panoramic views across the Franklin River Valley, with glimpses of the Collingwood River winding through the landscape. On a clear day, the dramatic peaks of Frenchman’s Cap, Mount Gell, Mount Arrowsmith and the King William Range dominate the horizon, delivering a true taste of Tasmania’s rugged wilderness.
Frenchman’s Cap is especially striking from this vantage point. Rising to 1,446 metres, it is formed from some of the oldest exposed rock in Australia and stands as one of Tasmania’s most iconic mountain peaks.
The Donaghys Hill Walk

The Donaghys Hill Walk is one of the 60 Great Short Walks of Tasmania, and it begins near the car park and initially follows an old 4WD track before narrowing into a well-defined walking trail. The path climbs steadily as it wraps around the side of Donaghys Hill, offering changing scenery along the way.
You’ll walk beneath a canopy of myrtle, sassafras and other cool-climate rainforest species, with the forest floor carpeted in mosses, lichens and delicate ferns. In spring and early summer, colourful wildflowers line sections of the track, adding bursts of colour to the lush green surroundings.
At the lookout near the summit, take your time to soak in the expansive views. Looking one way, the Franklin River Valley stretches out below, with Frenchman’s Cap rising dramatically in the distance. Turn the other way, and you’ll spot the Collingwood River, along with sweeping views toward Mount Gell, Mount Arrowsmith and the rugged King William Range.
