Ferntree Falls & Waterfalls Nature Walk – A Hidden Gem Near Ararat

Tucked away in Mount Buangor State Park, just east of Ararat in Victoria’s Goldfields region, Ferntree Falls is a peaceful forest waterfall surrounded by lush ferns, moss-covered rocks and towering eucalypts. This lesser-known destination is perfect for visitors seeking a short but rewarding bushwalk, with the bonus of discovering multiple waterfalls along a single scenic circuit.

Easily accessed from the Ferntree Picnic Area, Ferntree Falls makes a great stop for nature lovers, photographers and anyone looking to enjoy a quiet walk in a beautiful setting.

Discovering Mount Buangor State Park

Mount Buangor State Park protects a diverse landscape of eucalypt forests, fern-filled gullies, creek flats and waterfalls. The park is centred around Mount Buangor, the highest peak in the area, where visitors are rewarded with sweeping views across the surrounding countryside and farmland of western Victoria.

The park is also rich in birdlife and native plants, making it a wonderful place to slow down and explore at a relaxed pace.

Ferntree Falls – A Tranquil Forest Cascade

Just 250 metres from the picnic area, Ferntree Falls is the first and most accessible waterfall on the walk. The small cascade tumbles gently over mossy rock ledges, framed by vibrant green ferns and shaded by tall gums. Despite its modest size, Ferntree Falls is incredibly picturesque, particularly after rain, when the surrounding forest feels cool, fresh and alive.

The Walk to Ferntree Falls

Distance: 1.5-kilometre circuit - Time: Approximately 45 minutes - Difficulty: Moderate

The circuit walk begins at the Ferntree Picnic Area and follows a narrow but well-defined track. Along the way, you’ll walk beneath giant tree ferns and a mix of Manna Gums, Messmate and Blue Gums, creating a classic Australian forest atmosphere. There are stairs and uneven sections along the route, so take care, especially after rain, when surfaces can be slippery.

More Waterfalls Along the Way

One of the highlights of this walk is that Ferntree Falls is only the beginning. Continuing along the Waterfalls Nature Walk, you’ll cross small bridges and climb sections of stairs as the track winds deeper into the forest.

A short five-minute detour leads to Cascade Falls, where water flows across a broad granite rock face — a striking contrast to the fern-lined gullies elsewhere on the track. Further along, you’ll reach a third small waterfall, also nestled among lush tree ferns and mossy rocks, before the circuit loops back towards the picnic area.

Tips for Visiting Ferntree Falls

  • Wear sturdy footwear, as steps and tracks can be damp

  • Visit after rainfall for the best waterfall flow

  • Take your time on the stairs and narrow sections

  • Bring water and allow extra time for photography

  • Combine your visit with a picnic or short stay in the park
