Where Is Hopetoun Falls?

Hopetoun Falls is located in the Great Otway National Park, approximately 10 kilometres south of Beech Forest and around 30 minutes inland from Apollo Bay. The falls are easily reached via a sealed road, with a small carpark located right near the start of the walk.

This area of the Otways is known for its cool-climate rainforest, giant mountain ash trees, and abundant birdlife, making the journey just as enjoyable as the destination.

The Walk to Hopetoun Falls -1 kilometre - 30 Minutes - 200 stairs

The walk to Hopetoun Falls is short but involves a steep descent and ascent, so allow a little extra time if needed. The walking trail begins at the Hopetoun Falls carpark. Just 30 metres from the carpark, you’ll reach a lookout where you can peer through the trees and see the top of the waterfall plunging into the valley below.

From here, the track continues downhill via around 200 steps, descending through lush rainforest filled with tree ferns, moss-covered trunks, and towering canopy trees. The steps can be damp and slippery, especially after rain, so take care and use the handrails provided.

At the bottom of the stairs, you will reach a lovely boardwalk section that winds alongside the Aire River. This peaceful stretch leads you directly to the large viewing platform at the base of Hopetoun Falls.

There are no toilet facilities at the falls or the carpark.
The carpark is small and not suitable for buses, caravans, or large vehicles.
The walk includes approximately 200 steps, which can be wet and slippery, particularly after rain.
Sturdy, non-slip footwear is recommended.
Allow extra time for the return walk, as the climb back up is steep.
The viewing platform at the base of the falls can be damp and cool, even on warmer days.
