Walking Among Tasmania’s Ancient Pencil Pines

The Pine Lake Walk showcases one of Tasmania’s most remarkable and ancient tree species — the pencil pine (Athrotaxis cupressoides). These slow-growing conifers evolved long before flowering plants and are found only in Tasmania’s highland regions, generally above 800 metres.

Some of the pencil pines surrounding Pine Lake are believed to be over 1,000 years old, creating an almost timeless atmosphere as you wander through this alpine environment. Groves of these elegant trees sit at both ends of the lake, their fine, upright forms reflected beautifully in the calm water, especially on still days.

Pine Lake – 60 Great Short Walks of Tasmania

The Walk: 800 metres return - Time: 30 minutes - Grade: 1

Accessibility: Wheelchair and pram friendly

Pine Lake is one of Tasmania’s 60 Great Short Walks and is ideal for all ages and fitness levels. The raised boardwalk gently winds through alpine vegetation, including sphagnum moss, cushion plants, and pineapple grass, protecting the fragile environment while making the walk easy and enjoyable.

Interpretive signs along the track explain the unique alpine ecosystem, and there are several seating areas where you can pause, take photos, or simply soak up the peaceful surroundings.

Viewing Platforms & Lakeside Serenity

About halfway along the walk, you’ll reach a viewing platform with a seat overlooking the lake — a lovely spot to stop and enjoy the quiet. At the end of the boardwalk, another viewing area sits right at the water’s edge, offering uninterrupted views across Pine Lake and its pencil pine-lined shores.

This is a wonderful place to slow down, listen to the wind moving through the trees, and appreciate the stillness that makes Tasmania’s high country so special.

Alpine Conditions – What to Expect

Pine Lake sits at approximately 1,200 metres above sea level, and conditions can change quickly at any time of year. Even in summer, temperatures can be cool, and strong winds, fog, or sudden rain are common. In winter, ice and snow are often present.

Warm clothing, sturdy shoes, and checking weather conditions before visiting are strongly recommended.

Directions to Pine Lake

Pine Lake is located approximately 30 kilometres south of Deloraine, accessed via the Lake Highway. The road is sealed and suitable for 2WD vehicles, but care should be taken in winter or icy conditions.
