Portland is a charming historic city set on the western shores of Portland Bay in Victoria’s Great Ocean Road region. With beautiful beaches, leafy parks, great cafés and restaurants, and a busy working port, Portland makes a wonderful seaside getaway while offering a relaxed coastal atmosphere and rich historical significance.

Famous as Victoria’s first permanent European settlement, Portland was established in 1834, and its rich past is still visible today in the town’s well-preserved colonial buildings, museums, and waterfront precinct. Located approximately 350 kilometres west of Melbourne, it’s an ideal destination for a longer road trip or a coastal escape.

Exploring Portland Town Centre

Portland’s town centre is a delightful blend of historic charm and modern living. Quaint shops, cosy cafés, and boutique stores sit alongside heritage buildings, creating a unique mix of old and new.

The laid-back atmosphere makes it perfect for a leisurely wander, whether you’re browsing local shops, enjoying a long lunch, or settling in for a picnic by the sea. It’s a town that invites you to slow down and soak up the surroundings.

Portland Foreshore & Cable Tram

A highlight of the waterfront is the restored Portland Cable Tram, which offers a scenic ride along the foreshore. The journey provides excellent views of the harbour, passing ships, and the coastline, making it a relaxing way to see the town from a different perspective.

Portland Maritime Discovery Centre

We visited the Portland Maritime Discovery Centre, which is open daily from 9.00 am to 5.00 pm and offers fascinating insight into the region’s strong maritime heritage.

The engaging displays cover whaling, shipwrecks, rescue missions, navigation, and the local fishing industry.

The centrepiece of the museum is the 1858 Portland Lifeboat, renowned for its role in the dramatic Admella shipwreck rescue of 1859. It is one of the oldest remaining unrestored intact vessels in Australia and a true highlight of the visit.

Whalers Bluff & Lighthouse Views

At Whalers Bluff, you’ll find stunning views over Portland, the bay, and the busy port below. The Whalers Bluff Lighthouse was originally built on Battery Point in 1859 before being relocated stone by stone to its current position in 1889. Today, it continues to guide vessels safely past the treacherous Whaler’s Reef and into Portland Harbour.

Portland Botanic Gardens

The Portland Botanic Gardens were established in the 1850s by William Allitt and are among the earliest botanic gardens in Australia. Open daily from sunrise to sunset, the gardens feature lovely flower displays, shady trees, and peaceful walking paths, making them a perfect spot for a quiet break during your visit.

Historic Buildings of Portland

Portland is home to more than 200 historic 19th-century buildings, many constructed from bluestone. Wandering the streets reveals an impressive collection of architecture, including:

History House and Museum – originally the Town Hall, built in 1863
Portland Courthouse – completed in 1845 and still in use today
Rocket Shed – built in 1886, housing a display of 19th-century rescue rockets
Customs House – built in 1849 and still operating
All Saints Catholic Church – built in 1862, with the spire added in 1887
Mac’s Hotel – Portland’s first three-storey building, constructed in 1856
Annersley – built in 1878 as a surgery and residence, now boutique accommodation
St Stephen’s Anglican Church – Victoria’s oldest Anglican church, founded in 1855
Former Post Office – completed in 1883, now a restaurant
Former Loddon Inn – built in 1844 and now used as commercial offices

Cape Nelson State Park

A short drive from Portland takes you to Cape Nelson State Park, where dramatic coastal scenery meets fascinating history. The Cape Nelson Lighthouse, first lit on 7 July 1884, stands proudly above the rugged coastline. The lighthouse grounds are open daily, and guided tours allow visitors to explore inside.

Cape Bridgewater Adventures

Around 20 kilometres west of Portland, Cape Bridgewater is a must-visit. Wander along the seal walk to see Australian fur seals basking on the rocks, or explore the eerie Petrified Forest, formed over millions of years as limestone “solution pipes” were eroded by rainfall. You can also walk to the viewing platform to watch the ocean surge through the blowholes, carved into the volcanic rock by the powerful Southern Ocean.
