Strickland Falls - A Beautiful, Photogenic Waterfall near Hobart
Strickland Falls is a charming little waterfall hidden along the Hobart Rivulet in South Hobart, just a 10-minute drive from the city centre. While modest in size — dropping around four metres — this peaceful cascade is surrounded by lush rainforest and moss-covered rocks, creating a beautiful natural pocket right on Hobart’s doorstep.
The waterfall flows gently over a rocky ledge before continuing downstream, and after rainfall, it comes to life, making this a lovely spot for a short nature escape or a quiet moment by the water.
An Easy Walk to the Falls
One of the great things about Strickland Falls is how easy it is to reach. A small roadside parking area and picnic table sit nearby, making it perfect for a quick visit or a relaxed stop while exploring South Hobart.
From the car park:
Walk through the bushes along the creek
Carefully cross the Hobart Rivulet
Continue along the track for approximately 100 metres
You’ll soon arrive at the base of Strickland Falls, where the sound of flowing water and the cool forest air create a calm, secluded atmosphere.
A Photographer’s Favourite
Strickland Falls is a favourite spot for photographers, thanks to its intimate setting and soft, filtered light.
The combination of:
Moss-covered rocks
Fallen logs and ferns
Gently flowing water
Natural rainforest framing makes it ideal for long-exposure photography, particularly on overcast days or after rain.
Best Time to Visit
Strickland Falls is seasonal, so it’s best visited after rainfall when the rivulet is flowing well. Autumn and winter are especially lovely, with fewer visitors and rich green growth throughout the gully.
Getting to Strickland Falls
Strickland Falls is located along Strickland Avenue in South Hobart, approximately 10 minutes from Hobart CBD. Simply follow Strickland Avenue until you reach the small roadside parking area near the creek. From here, the short walk to the falls begins.
Final Thoughts
Strickland Falls is proof that you don’t need to travel far to enjoy Tasmania’s natural beauty. Easy to access, peaceful, and full of character, it’s a lovely spot for a quick walk, a photography stop, or a quiet escape from the city.
