1770 Afternoon LARC Cruise - A Pink Amphibious Adventure on Land & Water

The 1770 Afternoon LARC Cruise is one of those experiences that’s fun, unique and surprisingly scenic — and it’s perfect for all ages. During our stay in 1770, we jumped aboard the iconic bright pink LARC for this one-hour joyride and quickly discovered why it’s one of the most popular things to do in the region.

With breathtaking coastal scenery, entertaining commentary and the novelty of travelling seamlessly from road to water, this tour is a relaxed and memorable way to experience the coastline around 1770.

What Is a LARC?

Before we set off, we learned that LARC stands for Lighter, Amphibious, Resupply Cargo vehicle. Originally built for military use, these aluminium-constructed vehicles are designed to travel both on land and in water — and today, they’ve been repurposed into one of the most unique tour experiences in Queensland.

Seeing such a large vehicle drive straight off the road and into the water is an experience in itself.

Boarding at the 1770 Marina

Our tour began at the 1770 Marina, where the friendly skipper greeted us and allocated seats before we climbed aboard. The LARC has 28 seats, all elevated and well positioned, so everyone gets excellent views throughout the journey.

Once everyone was settled in, the skipper gave a brief safety talk and explained what we could expect along the way — setting the tone for a fun and informative hour ahead.

From Road to Water

One of the highlights came early, when we rolled straight off the road and splashed into the water, cruising across Round Hill Creek. Looking over the edge, we spotted stingrays gliding through the shallow water, which was an exciting bonus.

From here, the scenery really opened up as we travelled along the coastline, soaking up views of calm waterways, sandy shores and surrounding bushland.

Along Eurimbula National Park

The LARC then drove along the sand skirting the edge of Eurimbula National Park, an unspoilt stretch of coastline that feels wonderfully remote. The skipper’s commentary added plenty of interesting local history, facts about the area and a few laughs along the way.

We travelled up toward Eurimbula Creek, enjoying the peaceful setting and the novelty of moving effortlessly between land and water.

A Beach Stop & Photo Opportunity

The tour includes one beach stop, where we disembarked for a short walk, photos and a chance to take in the scenery. It was a great opportunity to stretch our legs, enjoy the fresh sea air and capture some memorable shots of the coastline — and of course, the bright pink LARC itself. After our stop, we climbed back aboard and headed back toward the marina, completing the loop.
