Arkaroo Rock is one of the most powerful and moving places to visit in the Flinders Ranges, offering far more than a scenic bushwalk. Located within Ikara–Flinders Ranges National Park, near Wilpena Pound, this culturally significant site invites visitors to connect with thousands of years of Aboriginal history while walking through a beautiful and ever-changing landscape.
Known to the Adnyamathanha people as Akurra Adnya, Arkaroo Rock is a place of deep spiritual meaning, storytelling and respect. Set beneath towering rock faces and overlooking sweeping plains, it’s a destination that encourages visitors to slow down, reflect and experience the landscape in a more meaningful way.
Arkaroo Rock Walk Overview

The Arkaroo Rock Loop Walk is one of the most rewarding short hikes in the Flinders Ranges, combining gentle climbs, panoramic views and an important cultural site along the way. The walk begins at the Arkaroo Rock car park, where you’ll find toilets, picnic tables and informative signage introducing the significance of the area.
Walking Toward Arkaroo Rock
From the trailhead, the track starts as a red dirt path that gradually climbs through dense native bush. As you walk, views begin to open up toward the walls of Wilpena Pound and the surrounding mountain ranges, giving you a real sense of the scale of the Flinders landscape.
The path becomes rockier and slightly steeper as you gain height, but it remains well-formed and manageable for most walkers. Several benches are positioned along the track, perfect for resting and taking in the scenery.
Near the top, you’ll pass a large rock on the trail. From here, turn left and follow the clearly marked path for around 200 metres to reach the Arkaroo Rock viewing area.
Arkaroo Rock and Its Cultural Significance
At Arkaroo Rock, a wooden viewing platform and bench allow visitors to sit quietly and appreciate the rock art while protecting the site. This rock shelter contains ochre and charcoal paintings believed to be around 6,000 years old.
The artwork represents creation stories and spiritual beliefs connected to the Akurra serpent beings, who are said to have shaped Wilpena Pound and the surrounding landscape. Interpretive signage explains the stories and cultural importance of the site, offering valuable insight into Adnyamathanha culture.
This is a place of great significance. Visitors are asked to be respectful, stay behind the viewing screen and refrain from touching the rock surface so the artwork can be preserved for future generations.
Ridge Walk and Scenic Views
After leaving the rock shelter, the loop track continues along a ridgeline, opening up to wide views across the surrounding plains and ranges. This section of the walk feels expansive and peaceful, providing a striking contrast to the intimacy of the rock shelter.
Late afternoon is especially beautiful here, as warm light brings out the reds and golds of the landscape and long shadows stretch across the valleys below.
Important Information Before You Go
A National Parks Pass is required to enter Ikara–Flinders Ranges National Park. It’s best to purchase your pass online before arriving, as mobile reception is limited. Passes are also available at the Wilpena Pound Visitor Centre.
Best Time to Visit Arkaroo Rock
Autumn, winter and spring are the best times to visit, with mild temperatures making walking more comfortable. Early morning and late afternoon offer softer light and a quieter atmosphere. Summer walks are possible but should be done early in the day with plenty of water, sun protection and awareness of heat conditions.
Where Is Arkaroo Rock?
Arkaroo Rock is located within Ikara–Flinders Ranges National Park, a short drive from Wilpena Pound. Access is via a well-signed, unsealed road leading to the car park and trailhead. The drive itself is part of the experience, with classic Flinders scenery, open plains and rugged mountain backdrops along the way.
Directions to Arkaroo Rock Car Park
From Wilpena Pound, head north-east for approximately 50 metres toward Wilpena Road. Continue along Wilpena Road for 180 metres, then continue onto Hawker–Wilpena Road and drive for 3.8 kilometres. Turn right onto Flinders Ranges Way and continue for 10.4 kilometres. Turn right onto Arkaroo Rock Road and follow it for 1.6 kilometres to reach the car park.
