Tucked away on the North Coast of New South Wales, at the mouth of the Brunswick River, Brunswick Heads is one of those places that instantly makes you slow down. Located around 774 kilometres north of Sydney and just 17 kilometres north of Byron Bay, this relaxed seaside village blends river life, beach culture, and a strong creative spirit. Whether you’re here for lazy river swims, coastal walks, or great food, Brunswick Heads has an easy charm that’s hard to resist.

A Village Made for Wandering

During our stay in Brunswick Heads, we did exactly what the town encourages — wandered. We explored the compact town centre, popped into the famous Bruns Bakery, admired colourful street art, and spent time along the river and beaches.

The heart of Brunswick Heads is full of cosy cafés, excellent restaurants, and boutique stores. As you stroll the streets, you’ll find shops selling handmade crafts, antiques, surfwear, and unique homewares, all reflecting the town’s creative, coastal personality.

Freshly Baked Favourites & Local Flavours

A visit to Brunswick Heads isn’t complete without a stop at the much-loved Bruns Bakery. Located right in the centre of town, this iconic bakery is famous for its freshly baked pies, pastries, artisan sourdough, cakes, and excellent barista-made coffee.

Open daily, Bruns Bakery has been operating in the same building since the 1950s and remains a favourite with both locals and visitors. Whether you’re grabbing breakfast or stocking up for a beach picnic, it’s a must-visit stop.

As you wander around town, keep an eye out for splashes of street art tucked along building walls and laneways, adding colour and character to the village streetscape. You may even spot a few tiny fairy houses hidden along the way — a whimsical touch that perfectly suits Brunswick Heads’ personality.

Riverside Icons & Live Music

Overlooking the river is the iconic Hotel Brunswick, affectionately known as the Bruns Pub. Built in 1942, this large riverside pub is a local institution, known for its relaxed atmosphere, spacious beer garden, classic pub meals, cold drinks, and regular live music.

Open seven days a week from 10:00am until midnight, it’s a great place to settle in and watch the river drift by.

Just around the corner is the Brunswick Picture House, a small retro-style theatre that hosts an eclectic mix of cabaret, live performances, concerts, and films. It’s a fantastic example of the town’s creative spirit and offers something a little different from the usual coastal attractions.

River Adventures & Calm Waters

The Brunswick River winds gently through town, offering clear, calm waters that are perfect for kayaking, paddleboarding, swimming, and fishing. Down at the Boat Harbour, you can hire a boat, join a fishing charter, or head out on a whale-watching cruise during the season from May to November.

One of the town’s natural highlights is Simpsons Creek, a beautiful stretch of river that runs parallel to the ocean. Easily accessible and wonderfully peaceful, it’s a popular spot for swimming, kayaking, and floating the day away. You can hire boats and kayaks from local operators on Simpson Creek, making it easy to explore from the water.

Beaches, Breakwalls & Dolphin Spotting

From the town centre, it’s an easy walk across the bridge to two very different beaches.

Main Beach stretches for around 10.5 kilometres and is popular for surfing, swimming, and long beach walks. It feels open and expansive, with plenty of space to find your own quiet patch of sand.

At the river mouth, Torakina Beach offers a calmer experience. Protected by the breakwall, this small, sheltered beach is ideal for families and anyone looking for a relaxed swim in gentle conditions.

You can also walk along the breakwall between the two beaches, where waves crash against the rocks and seabirds circle overhead. It’s a great spot to pause and watch for dolphins, which are often seen cruising along the coastline.
