Cape Buffon is one of the most scenic coastal walks in Canunda National Park, showcasing the raw beauty of South Australia’s Limestone Coast. Shaped over thousands of years by relentless wind and powerful Southern Ocean swells, this rugged stretch of coastline features dramatic limestone cliffs, offshore sea stacks, reef platforms and sweeping sandy beaches.

The Cape Buffon Walk is a rewarding yet easy stroll that offers spectacular ocean views almost the entire way. It’s a fantastic walk for photographers, nature lovers and anyone wanting to experience the wild coastal landscapes that make this part of South Australia so special.

Starting the Walk

We parked near the Southend Jetty and began the walk from the Jetty Lookout, which offers an excellent introduction to the coastline and views across the bay. The walk can also be started from the Rainbow Rocks carpark or the Cape Buffon carpark, making it easy to tailor the walk to your plans.

The track is well-marked and easy to follow, with a natural surface that gently undulates along the cliff tops. While the walk is considered easy, there are several sections close to cliff edges, so it’s important to keep a safe distance and take extra care on windy days.

Rugged Coastline & Sea Stacks

As you follow the trail, the landscape opens up to reveal one of the most dramatic sections of the Canunda coastline. Towering limestone cliffs drop sharply into the ocean below, where waves crash against reef platforms and sculpted rock formations. Offshore, weathered sea stacks rise from the water, standing as striking reminders of the constant erosion that continues to shape this coastline.

Several strategically placed lookouts and seats along the track invite you to pause, soak in the views and watch the ever-changing ocean. On clear days, the colours of the water range from deep blues to turquoise, contrasting beautifully with the pale limestone cliffs and golden sands below.

Beaches, Flora & Wildlife

The walk also passes quieter stretches of sandy beach, tucked between rocky headlands and sheltered from the wind. These areas are ideal for a peaceful break or simply enjoying the sound of the ocean.

Along the way, keep an eye out for native coastal vegetation, including hardy grasses, low shrubs and seasonal wildflowers that thrive in the salty air. Birdlife is common, with seabirds often seen soaring along the cliffs or resting on rocky outcrops.
