Cobb & Co Stagecoach Experience, Longreach - A Ride Back in Time
Climbing aboard a Cobb & Co stagecoach and setting off behind a team of powerful horses felt like stepping straight into Australia’s outback past. The Cobb & Co Stagecoach Experience in Longreach, in Outback Queensland, is a fun, immersive journey that brings history to life through storytelling, laughter, and a surprising burst of adrenaline — all wrapped up with classic outback hospitality. This was one of our favourite experiences during our stay in Longreach.
A Half-Day Step Into Outback History
The Cobb & Co Stagecoach Experience runs Monday to Friday from April to October and takes around four hours to complete.
The experience includes:
A 45-minute stagecoach ride
Traditional outback Smoko
A classic Australian bush movie in the old theatre
An Old Time Tent Show filled with humour and animal antics
The stagecoach departs from the Cobb & Co Courtyard, located behind the Station Store in Longreach.
Meeting the Horses & Boarding the Stagecoach
Our morning began in the courtyard, where we admired the beautifully cared-for horses and posed for a photo with Buck the Blue Heeler, who quickly won everyone over.
After putting on our headphones, we climbed aboard the lovingly restored stagecoach, settling into our seats as the horses were harnessed and readied for the journey ahead.
Along the Original Mail Route
The ride began at a relaxed pace as we rolled through town before heading out along a section of the original Longreach–Windorah mail route. As we travelled, the driver shared informative and entertaining commentary about Cobb & Co, life on the mail run, and the challenges faced by early outback travellers. It was easy to imagine how vital these stagecoaches once were — carrying mail, supplies, and passengers across vast and unforgiving landscapes.
Hold On Tight — The Gallop!
Once the stagecoach was turned around, it was time for the most exhilarating part of the experience. We were told to hang on to our hats, and for good reason — the horses broke into a gallop along the bush track. This is the only place in Australia where you can gallop in a stagecoach, and it was an absolute thrill. The sound of hooves, the rush of wind, and the laughter onboard made it a highlight of our time in Longreach.
The return ride back through town was more leisurely, giving us time to relax and take in the experience.
Outback Smoko - Delicious Scones
Back at the Cobb & Co Courtyard, we disembarked just in time for Smoko. Morning tea was served in the Welcome Home Tearoom, where we enjoyed tea, coffee, freshly baked scones, jam, and cream. It was a lovely pause in the day and a chance to chat about the stagecoach ride with fellow travellers.
A Classic Bush Movie Experience
Next, we headed into the Outback Theatre for an old-time bush movie. With sling-back canvas seats, popcorn, and a nostalgic atmosphere, it felt wonderfully old-fashioned.
We watched Smilie Gets a Gun, a PG-rated Australian film from 1958, which added another layer of charm and humour to the experience.
The Old Time Tent Show
The final part of the experience took place back in the Cobb & Co Courtyard with the Old Time Tent Show. Here, we were entertained with quirky outback humour, storytelling, and animal antics — a fun and lively way to finish the morning. No filming is allowed during the show, which helps keep the performance feeling authentic and interactive, but there’s time for photos before and after.
Don't Miss the Cobb & Co Stagecoach Experience
The Cobb & Co Stagecoach Experience is a brilliant mix of history, hands-on fun, and classic outback entertainment. From the thrill of galloping behind a team of horses to sharing Smoko and laughing through old-time shows, it’s an experience that appeals to all ages.
For us, it was one of the most enjoyable and memorable activities in Longreach — a chance to experience outback history not just by learning about it, but by living it. If you’re visiting Longreach, this is an experience that shouldn’t be missed.
