Drover's Sunset Cruise & Smithy's Outback
Dinner Show
One of our favourite nights in Longreach, in Outback Queensland, combined everything we love about outback experiences — wide skies, river sunsets, good food, and genuine storytelling. We joined the Drover’s Sunset Cruise with Outback Aussie Tours, followed by Smithy’s Outback Dinner and Show, and it turned into an evening that perfectly captured the spirit of the Australian outback.
An Easy Start to the Evening
Our evening began with a relaxed pickup by the Outback Aussie Tours bus, which collected us directly from our accommodation at Apex Riverside Park. It was an easy, stress-free start, allowing us to simply sit back and enjoy the anticipation of the night ahead.
We were dropped off at Smithy’s, right on the banks of the Thomson River, where we boarded the Longreach Explorer. With its open-top deck, the boat immediately impressed us — the views across the river and surrounding floodplains were expansive and unmistakably outback.
Cruising the Thomson River at Sunset
As we slowly meandered along the Thomson River, the crew kept everyone engaged with fascinating stories about the river system, local birdlife, wildlife, and Indigenous heritage. It added so much depth to the experience, turning a scenic cruise into something far more meaningful.
One highlight was seeing an Aboriginal scar tree up close and learning about its cultural significance — a powerful reminder of the long history tied to this landscape.
Onboard, there’s a licensed bar, so we enjoyed a drink while snacking on the complimentary savoury nibbles — the perfect pairing as the late afternoon light softened across the water.
Sunset Bend & Golden Hour Magic
The boat moored at Sunset Bend, giving us the chance to step ashore and capture some stunning sunset photos. The colours were everything you hope for in the outback — warm golds, deep oranges, and long reflections stretching across the river.
We watched the final glow of sunset from the deck as we cruised back to Smithy’s, the sky slowly fading into twilight. It was peaceful, unhurried, and one of those moments where everyone quietly takes it all in.
Dinner Under the Outback Stars at Smithy’s
Back on the riverbank, Smithy’s Outback Dinner and Show was waiting for us. Tables of six were set under the stars, all facing the stage, with fairy lights twinkling overhead and roaring campfires creating a warm and welcoming atmosphere.
There’s also a bar on site, so we grabbed a drink and settled in, enjoying the relaxed outback setting as the night unfolded.
A Hearty Outback Dinner
Dinner was served to the table by the friendly, attentive staff as an alternate drop. We were treated to:
Crispy Skinned Barramundi
Lamb Hotpot, both served with potatoes and vegetables
For dessert, we enjoyed an alternate drop of Chocolate Jaffa Brownie and Passionfruit Cheesecake, followed later in the evening by the classic outback pairing of billy tea and damper — a lovely, nostalgic touch to finish the meal.
Songs, Stories & Lots of Fun
As dinner is served, the stage comes alive with live entertainment from a talented local musician. The performance blends music, storytelling, and classic outback humour, creating a relaxed and engaging atmosphere under the stars. It’s the perfect accompaniment to the evening — easy to listen to, full of character, and a wonderful way to experience the spirit and stories of the region while enjoying dinner by the river.
Why This Experience Is a Must in Longreach
The Drover’s Sunset Cruise and Smithy’s Outback Dinner and Show is more than just an evening out — it’s a beautifully paced outback experience that combines landscape, culture, food, and entertainment.
For us, it was one of those nights that summed up Longreach perfectly — watching the sun set over the Thomson River, sharing good food under the stars, and ending the evening with stories and songs that made us laugh and reflect. If you’re visiting Longreach, this is one experience we’d highly recommend adding to your itinerary.
