Erskine Falls – Classic Otways Waterfall Near Lorne
Erskine Falls is one of the most visited and much-loved waterfalls in the Great Otway Ranges, and it’s easy to see why. This spectacular 30-metre waterfall plunges into a fern-lined rock pool, surrounded by lush, green rainforest that feels worlds away from the nearby coastline.
Located just 10 kilometres inland from Lorne on the Great Ocean Road, Erskine Falls is easily accessible and offers visitors two very different viewpoints — one from above and another right at the base of the falls.
A Waterfall That Flows Year-Round
Thanks to the Otways’ high annual rainfall, Erskine Falls usually has water flowing in most seasons. It is particularly impressive during winter and after heavy rain, when the cascade thunders down the cliff face and the surrounding rainforest is at its greenest. Even in drier months, the shaded gully and towering trees make this a cool and enjoyable place to visit year-round.
Viewing Platforms at the Top and Base
One of the highlights of Erskine Falls is the choice of viewpoints. The upper viewing platform offers a dramatic top-down perspective, allowing you to watch the water plunge into the gorge below.
For a more immersive experience, the lower platform places you right at the base of the falls, where you can feel the spray and appreciate the scale of the surrounding forest. The sound of the water crashing into the pool below adds to the magic of the setting.
The Walk to Erskine Falls
Distance: 440 metres return - Time: Around 30 minutes - Difficulty: Moderate
The walk begins at the Erskine Falls carpark, which has informative signage about the area and the waterfall. The upper viewing platform is just 80 metres from the carpark and can be reached in about five minutes along an easy path.
To reach the lower lookout, follow the well-maintained track down 240 steep steps through dense rainforest. While the descent is manageable for most people, the climb back up can be challenging, so allow time and take breaks as needed. Benches are placed along the track for resting.
