Green Hill Lake Campground – Free Camping

Near Ararat

Green Hill Lake Campground is a spacious and well-maintained free bush campground set around the edge of a large lake near Ararat. Located approximately 4 kilometres from town and around 200 kilometres west of Melbourne, it’s an easy and popular camping destination in Victoria’s Grampians region.

With a mix of lakeside and bush camping areas, Green Hill Lake is ideal for longer stays and relaxed stopovers, offering plenty of space, good facilities, and easy access for all types of camping setups.

Green Hill Lake Campground – Camping & Access

Access to Green Hill Lake Campground from Ararat is via a fully sealed road, making it easy to reach for motorhomes and caravans. Roads around the campground itself are hard-packed dirt and well-maintained, allowing straightforward access to most campsites.

The campground is very large, with plenty of lake-front sites and many additional camping areas set back in the surrounding bush. It is suitable for motorhomes, caravans, camper trailers and tents, with a good mix of open sunny sites and more sheltered, shady spots.

We chose a flat lakeside campsite with no trees, which gave us excellent solar. Some sections along the lake’s edge have soft sand, so it’s worth checking the ground before driving onto a site if you’re in a 2WD vehicle or motorhome. We stayed here in November and found the campground quiet, with only a handful of other campers and plenty of space to spread out.

Amenities & Facilities

Green Hill Lake Campground has excellent facilities for a free campground. There are several amenities blocks with flushing toilets, and the first amenities block also has warm showers available for $2, providing approximately four minutes of hot water.

A public dump point is located on the far side of the lake, and there are multiple potable water taps throughout the campground for filling tanks. Rubbish and recycling bins are conveniently placed around the camping areas, making it easy to keep your site tidy.

The reserve also features a boat ramp, playground, picnic tables, walking tracks and BBQ facilities. Firewood can be purchased locally, with a contact number displayed on the amenities block to arrange delivery and check current pricing.

Green Hill Lake Campground is free to stay and operates on a first-come, first-served basis, with no bookings available. Donation boxes are located at each amenities block, and contributions help local volunteers maintain and improve the campground. Stays longer than five nights require a free permit from the local council.

Ararat Stopover

Green Hill Lake Campground is just a short drive from Ararat, a regional city in Victoria’s Grampians region. Ararat has a good range of supermarkets, cafés, bakeries, specialty shops, petrol stations and essential services, making it a convenient place to stock up before settling in by the lake.

During our stay, we picked up supplies in town and cooked chicken satays with a creamy peanut sauce back at camp — an easy and delicious dinner to enjoy while watching the light change over the lake.
