The Walk to Halls Falls

Distance: approx. 1.5 km return - Time: 30–45 minutes - Difficulty: Easy–Moderate

The walk to Halls Falls begins from a small car park, where you’ll find an information board outlining the walking tracks in the area. The track gently winds through the forest and follows the Groom River, with a mix of flat sections and a few undulating rises along the way.

As you approach the falls, the path descends slightly to the base of the cascade, where you can stand close to the water and enjoy the cool, fern-filled surrounds. There is also a viewing area from above, offering a different perspective of the falls as the river tumbles over the rocks below.

The Historic Weir

If you’d like to continue a little further, the track leads another 500 metres upstream to the historic weir, built by hand in the late 1800s. This peaceful stretch of river adds an extra layer of interest to the walk and is well worth the short extension if you have time.

Tips for Visiting Halls Falls

• The track can be slippery after rain, especially near the base of the falls — sturdy shoes are recommended

• Best visited after rainfall, when the waterfall is flowing more strongly

Getting to Halls Falls

Halls Falls is located approximately 25 kilometres from St Helens. From St Helens, follow the Tasman Highway toward Weldborough. Look for the signposted turn-off to Halls Falls on the right and turn onto Anchor Road. Follow this gravel road (suitable for 2WD vehicles) for around 1 kilometre until you reach the parking area.
