Just a short drive north of Launceston, Lilydale Falls is one of those places that quietly surprises you. Tucked away in lush bushland near the small town of Lilydale, this peaceful waterfall walk is perfect for a gentle nature escape, whether you’re travelling with family, chasing waterfalls, or simply stretching your legs on a Tasmania road trip.

Located around 28 kilometres north of Launceston, Lilydale Falls is easily accessible and rewarding, offering a scenic forest walk that leads to two lovely cascades hidden among towering eucalypts and rainforest ferns.

A Peaceful Bushland Setting

Lilydale Falls sits within the Lilydale Falls Reserve, where the Second River winds its way through dense greenery before tumbling over rocky ledges. The reserve feels calm and welcoming, with well-maintained paths and the soothing sound of flowing water accompanying you almost the entire way.

It’s an ideal stop if you’re short on time but still want to experience Tasmania’s beautiful forests and waterfalls.

Discovering the Two Lilydale Falls

Lilydale Falls is actually a pair of waterfalls, each with its own character. The first waterfall, which you reach shortly after branching off the main track, drops around ten metres into a rocky creek below. From here, you can enjoy views from the platform or make your way carefully down to the base of the falls for a closer look.

The second waterfall is slightly smaller, falling approximately eight metres into a large, tranquil waterhole. Surrounded by greenery, this spot feels especially peaceful and is a favourite for photographers.

The Lilydale Falls Walk

The walk to Lilydale Falls is short, easy, and suitable for most ages and fitness levels.

Starting from the car park, the track leads under the bridge and alongside the river, following a shaded path through forest and rainforest. After around 400 metres, you’ll reach a fork in the track:

• Take the lower path to reach the viewing platform for the first falls and access to the base

• Take the upper path to reach the viewing platform for the second falls

Both options are well signposted, and you can easily visit both waterfalls on the same walk.
