A Waterfall Born from Queensland’s Highest Peak

Josephine Creek begins as a small mountain stream high on the south-eastern slopes of Mount Bartle Frere, Queensland’s highest mountain. From here, it travels approximately 7.5 kilometres downhill before tumbling over granite boulders to form the spectacular multi-tiered Josephine Falls. The result is a powerful yet inviting cascade that flows year-round, especially impressive after rainfall.

Easy Day Trip from Cairns

Josephine Falls is located around 75 kilometres south of Cairns, making it an ideal day trip from the city or the Atherton Tablelands. The drive takes approximately 1.5 hours on fully sealed roads and passes through beautiful rainforest landscapes along the way.

Short Rainforest Walk to the Falls

From the car park, a 700-metre well-maintained walking track winds through lush tropical rainforest to the base of the falls. The walk is easy and suitable for most visitors, offering a peaceful introduction to the surrounding Wet Tropics environment before the waterfall comes into view.

Viewing Platforms & Scenic Lookouts

Several viewing platforms are located around Josephine Falls, allowing you to safely admire and photograph the cascades from different angles. These platforms offer excellent views of the water rushing over the granite boulders and into the pools below.

Swimming & the Famous Rock Slide

At the lower viewing platform, you can access a large rock pool where swimming is permitted. The clear, cool green water is incredibly refreshing, especially on warm tropical days.

One of the highlights here is the natural rock slide, formed by smooth granite and flowing water. Sliding down into the pool below is a uniquely fun experience — but always take care and follow safety signage, as conditions can change quickly.
