Kenilworth, Queensland - Donuts, Dairy Delights & Giant Fig Trees

Tucked between the gentle curves of the Mary River and the rolling hills of the Blackall and Conondale Ranges, in Queensland, Kenilworth is one of those country towns that wins you over almost instantly. Around 160 kilometres north of Brisbane, this charming Sunshine Coast Hinterland destination blends old-fashioned hospitality with standout local produce, creative quirks, and peaceful nature walks. It’s a place where mornings start with donuts, afternoons drift by a creek, and weekends revolve around markets and good food.

On our visit to Kenilworth, we wandered around the town centre and tried the donuts at the Kenilworth Country Bakery. We also visited the Kenilworth Dairies and meandered along the Fig Tree Walk at Little Yabba Creek. We explored the local markets and saw a Designer Dunny!

Donuts, Legends & the Kenilworth Country Bakery

A visit to Kenilworth almost always starts at the iconic Kenilworth Country Bakery. Established in 1924 and housed in the town’s oldest building, this heritage-listed bakery is famous far beyond the region.

The donut display alone is reason enough to stop, but the bakery is best known for its legendary 1-kilogram donut challenge. Inside, the walls are lined with hundreds of silver plates engraved with the names of those who’ve completed it — a fun reminder of Kenilworth’s playful spirit. There are even donuts made especially for dogs.

We grabbed coffee and donuts and enjoyed them in the outdoor laneway, where colourful pop-art murals add to the lively atmosphere.

A Taste of the Region at Kenilworth Dairies

Further along the main street, Kenilworth Dairies is another must-visit. Open seven days a week, the dairies are a celebration of local flavour and craftsmanship.

The Cellar Door is stocked with regional relishes, jams, sauces, and wines, while Dairy Alley showcases an impressive range of soft and hard cheeses, yoghurts, and indulgent mousses. At Poppa’s Café, you can settle in with a coffee, enjoy morning tea or lunch, or cool off with one of their handmade ice creams — perfect on a warm hinterland day.

Fig Tree Walk at Little Yabba Creek

For a walk in nature, we headed to Little Yabba Creek Park, located about 6.5 kilometres from Kenilworth. This is the starting point for the peaceful Fig Tree Walk, an easy 1.1-kilometre circuit.

The flat track and boardwalk wind through riverine rainforest, with the highlight being several magnificent 150-year-old Moreton Bay fig trees. The atmosphere here is calm and shaded, with birdsong and flowing water creating a sense of quiet escape.

Interpretive signs along the walk share insights into the forest and its wildlife. One important note — giant stinging trees grow in this area, and their stinging hairs can cause pain lasting days or even months, so it’s best to stay on the track and avoid brushing against foliage.

Poetry, Parks & the Designer Dunny

While exploring Little Yabba Creek Park, we also came across poetry installations that form part of the Sunshine Coast Hinterland to Headland Poetry Trail, adding a thoughtful and creative layer to the landscape.

We then drove to visit the much-talked-about ‘Designer Dunny’ at Isaac Moore Park. Designed by Maleny industrial artist Michael Lennie, this striking public artwork and toilet block resembles an unfinished Indigenous fishing basket and has become one of Kenilworth’s most curious landmarks.

Kenilworth Markets

If you’re visiting on a Saturday, the Kenilworth Markets are well worth a wander. Held every Saturday from 8.00 am to 1.00 pm in the Kenilworth Town Park, the markets showcase fresh local produce, homemade arts and crafts, food stalls, and live music.

It’s a relaxed, friendly market that reflects the town’s strong community spirit and love of local goods.

Why Kenilworth Is Worth the Detour

Kenilworth blends simple pleasures with memorable experiences — warm country hospitality, outstanding local food, gentle rainforest walks, and a few delightful surprises along the way. Whether you’re biting into a famous donut, sampling local cheese, or standing beneath ancient fig trees, the town invites you to slow down and enjoy the moment. If you’re exploring the Sunshine Coast Hinterland, Kenilworth is a rewarding stop that delivers flavour, nature, and character in equal measure.
