The Laratinga Wetlands, located just outside Mount Barker in the Adelaide Hills, are both a vital environmental asset and a wonderful place to enjoy an easy walk in nature. Constructed in 1999 as a water reclamation facility, the wetlands have since become an important habitat for wildlife and a much-loved recreational space for locals and visitors alike. Today, Laratinga is best known for its peaceful walking trails, open water views and exceptional birdwatching, offering a quiet escape where nature and sustainability come together.

A Haven for Birdlife

Laratinga Wetlands provide essential habitat for resident, migratory and nomadic bird species, with more than 150 species recorded in the area. Depending on the season, visitors may spot black swans, pelicans, ducks, herons, cormorants and many smaller waterbirds moving between the lagoons. The mix of open water, reed beds and surrounding vegetation creates ideal conditions for feeding, nesting and resting, making the wetlands one of the best birdwatching spots in the Adelaide Hills.

Walking Trails and Facilities

A network of walking trails and boardwalks winds through the wetlands, allowing visitors to explore the area at an easy pace while minimising impact on the environment. Bird hides are positioned around the wetlands, offering quiet vantage points for observing wildlife.

The Rosella Trail

During our visit, we followed the Rosella Trail, a 2-kilometre circuit that starts from the main picnic area. This easy walk takes around 45 minutes to complete and is one of the most popular loops in the reserve. The highlight of the walk is the abundance of birdlife, particularly the graceful black swans gliding across the water. The wide, flat paths make it a relaxed stroll, perfect for families, casual walkers and anyone wanting to enjoy nature without tackling hills or rough terrain.

Art, Culture and Community Spaces

Near the main picnic area, you’ll find a striking collection of murals created as part of the ‘Batpiori’ Airbrushing Project. These large-scale artworks add colour and meaning to the wetlands and reflect strong cultural storytelling.

The murals include:

‘Elder’ – depicting an ancient First Nations man
‘Home’ – a rural landscape scene
‘Time’ – a faux graffiti-style wall
‘Local’ – featuring a cockatoo

The project was designed to give young Aboriginal artists the opportunity to showcase their work in a rural setting, celebrating culture, identity and connection to place.

In the same area, you’ll also spot sculptures by Robert Wuldi and an interesting Bee Hotel, highlighting the wetlands’ role in supporting pollinators and biodiversity.
