Lobster Falls, Tasmania - A Hidden Waterfall in the Gog Range
Lobster Falls is a beautiful and lesser-known waterfall tucked away on Lobster Rivulet, flowing between steep cliff faces in the Gog Range, between Deloraine and Mole Creek in northern Tasmania. Surrounded by dense forest and rugged terrain, this hidden cascade feels wonderfully remote and rewards those willing to venture off the beaten path.
The peaceful setting, narrow gorge and cascading water make Lobster Falls a rewarding destination for confident hikers looking to explore one of the quieter corners of the Great Western Tiers region.
The Walk to Lobster Falls
Distance: 4.2 kilometres return - Time: Approx. 2 hours - Grade: 4
The walk to Lobster Falls begins along an old 4WD track, which is easy to follow and relatively flat at first. Before long, the trail narrows and starts to descend steeply toward Lobster Rivulet, signalling the start of a more adventurous section of the walk.
As you follow the track along the cliffs above the rivulet, take care — this section can be narrow with loose rocks, and footing can be tricky, especially after rain.
Upper and Lower Cascades
Partway along the trail, you’ll reach a junction:
One track leads to the upper cascade of Lobster Falls
The other continues for about one kilometre to the lower cascade
We chose to visit the upper cascade, where a small open area provides a great vantage point to view and photograph the falls as they tumble through the gorge.
For those wanting to get closer, it is possible to reach the base of the waterfall, but be aware that this involves a very steep and slippery rocky descent, which should only be attempted with care and suitable footwear.
Track Conditions & Tips
Small bridges and steps have been installed along sections of the track to assist walkers, but conditions can still be challenging. After rain, the trail may become muddy and slippery, particularly on the steeper sections.
Good hiking shoes, careful footing and allowing extra time are recommended, especially if you plan to explore beyond the upper cascade.
Getting There
Lobster Falls is conveniently located just 10 minutes from Deloraine or Mole Creek.
The track is accessed from Mole Creek Road (B12)
Look for the Lobster Falls street sign between Dairy Plains Road and Chudleigh
Parking is available on the roadside near the start of the track
Why Visit Lobster Falls?
If you enjoy quiet bushwalks, hidden waterfalls and exploring less-visited natural areas, Lobster Falls is a rewarding addition to any visit to Deloraine and the Great Western Tiers.
With its rugged setting and peaceful atmosphere, it’s a great option for adventurous walkers wanting to experience Tasmania beyond the well-known trails.
