Tucked just off the Lyell Highway near Queenstown, Nelson Falls is one of Tasmania’s most accessible and rewarding West Coast waterfalls. Set within the Franklin–Gordon Wild Rivers National Park, this beautiful cascade tumbles through lush temperate rainforest, offering an immersive nature experience with minimal effort.

With its short, flat walk and impressive waterfall views, Nelson Falls is a must-see stop for anyone travelling through Tasmania’s wild west.

A Waterfall in an Ancient Rainforest

Nelson Falls plunges around 30 metres down dark, tiered rock into the Nelson River below. The contrast between the black rock face, white rushing water, and vibrant green rainforest makes it especially photogenic.

The waterfall flows year-round, but it is particularly spectacular after rain, when the volume of water increases and the sound of the falls echoes through the forest.

The Nelson Falls walk is one of Tasmania’s 60 Great Short Walks, and it’s ideal for visitors of all ages and abilities.

The track is flat and well-formed, with long sections of wooden boardwalk winding through the rainforest. It is wheelchair accessible with assistance, making Nelson Falls one of the most inclusive waterfall walks on the West Coast.

Walking Beside the Nelson River

As you follow the track, it meanders gently beside the Nelson River, passing through forest filled with moss-covered myrtle, sassafras, and towering trees. The cool, damp air and filtered light give the walk a peaceful, almost timeless feel.

Along the way, interpretive signs explain how the rainforest has evolved and highlight the ancient plant species that have survived here thanks to the cool, temperate climate — a fascinating insight into Tasmania’s World Heritage landscapes.

Viewing Platform at the Falls

At the end of the track, a large viewing platform provides an excellent vantage point over Nelson Falls. From here, you can safely admire the full height of the cascade and watch the water plunge into the river below.

It’s a perfect place to pause, take photos, or simply enjoy the sights and sounds of the rainforest before retracing your steps back to the car park.

Directions to Nelson Falls

From Queenstown, head northwest on Cutten Street towards Driffield Street, then turn right onto Driffield Street. Turn right onto Batchelor Street / Lyell Highway (A10) and follow it for approximately 26.9 kilometres.
