The Old Wilpena Station Walk is an easy, family-friendly stroll that allows plenty of time to explore and read the interpretive signage along the way. The walk begins near the car park, where you’ll find signs for the Living with Land trail and a map of the area. From here, cross the small creek footbridge, pass the old chicken coops and follow the path toward the homestead.

The Wilpena Homestead

The main residence at Wilpena Station was historically known as Government House. In the early 1850s, it began as a modest pug and pine hut, constructed using local native pine for posts, rafters and battens. A small stone residence followed in 1860, reflecting the gradual establishment of the station.

In 1888, the substantial stone homestead that stands today was built. This five-room residence features French windows, calico ceilings, a stone cellar, shingle-roofed verandahs and a detached pine kitchen — a significant upgrade that reflected the station’s growing importance. While visitors cannot enter the homestead, interpretive signage shares its story, and the surrounding gardens offer a pleasant place to pause and imagine daily life here more than a century ago.
