The Walk to Pelverata Falls

The Walk: 6 kilometres return | Time: 2.5–3 hours | Grade 4

The walk to Pelverata Falls is rewarding but challenging and best suited to walkers with a reasonable level of fitness. The track begins gently, winding through tall eucalyptus forest before transitioning into a cool, shaded rainforest filled with tree ferns, mossy logs and trickling streams.

As you move deeper into the reserve, the landscape becomes more dramatic and enclosed, with steep slopes and rocky outcrops surrounding the trail.

In the final section, the track narrows and climbs along a rocky ledge before descending carefully toward the viewing area. This section can be slippery and uneven, especially after rain, so take your time and watch your footing.

At the end of the track, you’ll reach the viewing area at the base of Pelverata Falls. From here, the scale of the waterfall truly hits home — water cascades down the towering cliff face high above, often breaking into fine mist as it crashes into the gorge.

After good rainfall, look carefully across the gorge to the right, and you may also spot Slippery Falls, another beautiful cascade adding to the dramatic scenery. It’s a powerful, humbling place to pause, listen to the roar of the water, and take in the wild beauty of southern Tasmania.

Best Time to Visit Pelverata Falls

Pelverata Falls is seasonal, and the best time to visit is after good rainfall, particularly in winter, spring, or after heavy summer rain. During drier periods, the waterfall may be reduced to a trickle.

Tips for Visiting Pelverata Falls

• Visit after rain for the best flow — the waterfall is far more impressive when water levels are high

• Wear sturdy hiking boots — the track is steep, rocky and can be slippery

• Pack waterproof clothing — mist and sudden weather changes are common

• Not suitable for young children due to steep drop-offs and narrow sections

• Limited phone reception — download maps and info beforehand

Directions to Pelverata Falls

From Hobart, head south-east on Murray Street, then follow the A6 (Huon Highway) for approximately 21 kilometres. Turn onto Sandfly Road, then follow Pelverata Road (C621) and Umfrevilles Road to the Pelverata Falls car park.

The final section is on a gravel road but is generally suitable for 2WD vehicles in dry conditions.
