Viewing Pencil Pine Falls from the Rainforest Walk

One of the easiest ways to see Pencil Pine Falls is via the Rainforest Walk, a short and accessible 10-minute walk that starts behind the Ranger Station and Interpretation Centre. This well-maintained track winds through myrtle and pencil pine forest before reaching a viewing deck overlooking the falls. It’s an easy stroll suitable for all ages and a great introduction to Cradle Mountain’s rainforest environment.

Knyvet Falls Walk: A Closer Look

For those wanting a closer perspective, the Knyvet Falls Walk provides access to both the top and base of Pencil Pine Falls. This walk begins across from the Cradle Mountain Lodge shop and follows a fully constructed boardwalk through lush forest.

The lookout along this track offers a beautiful close-up view of the waterfall and is a lovely option if you want to experience the falls from a different angle.

Pencil Pine Cascades

Just nearby, the Pencil Pine Cascades can be viewed from the bridge beside the road near Cradle Mountain Lodge. These smaller cascades are easy to spot and add another scenic water feature to your visit, especially after rain.

Directions to Pencil Pine Falls at Cradle Mountain

Cradle Mountain–Lake St Clair National Park is located in central Tasmania and is easily accessible from both Launceston and Hobart. The northern entrance is via the town of Sheffield, approximately a 1.5-hour drive from Launceston.

Parking and Access

You must park at the Cradle Mountain Visitor Centre and purchase a shuttle bus ticket with your National Park Pass. Take the shuttle bus to the Ranger Station / Interpretation Centre to begin the Rainforest Walk or access nearby tracks.
