Rangelands Rifts & Sunset Tour, Winton - Outback Ancient Landscapes & Stunning Sunset

One of the most memorable afternoons we had in Winton, in Outback Queensland, was on the Rangelands Rifts & Sunset Tour with Red Dirt Tours. This relaxed small-group experience took us deep into a privately owned cattle station to explore ancient rock formations before finishing the day with a classic Outback Queensland sunset, a glass of wine in hand, and endless views across the plains.

An Easy Start from Winton

The Rangelands Rifts & Sunset Tour runs for approximately three hours and operates Monday, Wednesday, and Saturday, departing Winton at around 4.15 pm — perfectly timed for golden hour.

We were picked in Winton and travelled about 15 kilometres out of town by bus to Rangelands Station, a privately owned working cattle property. As the rifts are located on private land, joining a guided tour is the only way to access this remarkable landscape.

Exploring the Rangelands Rifts

Once we arrived, the bus drove us up onto the mesa, or jump-up, where sweeping views opened up across the surrounding outback. From here, our guide led us down into the rifts — narrow channels carved through solid rock by millions of years of erosion.

Walking through the rifts was fascinating. The rock walls rise on either side, creating natural corridors that feel both dramatic and peaceful. Along the way, our guide shared insights into the geology of the area, how the rifts were formed, and the history of Rangelands Station. Every turn revealed a new perspective — textured rock faces, changing light, and stunning views back out across the plains from the jump-up.

Sunset on the Jump-Up

After exploring the rifts, we hopped back on the bus and made our way to the sunset lookout, one of the best vantage points in the area.

As the sun began to dip toward the horizon, we enjoyed a glass of wine and light nibbles, soaking up the stillness and watching the colours slowly change across the sky. The outback sunset was spectacular — deep oranges, soft pinks, and long shadows stretching across the land. It was one of those quiet, reflective moments that perfectly captures the magic of Outback Queensland.

Returning to Winton

Once the sun had fully set, we made the relaxed journey back to Winton, arriving back at our accommodation as twilight settled in. The timing made it easy to head out for dinner afterward or simply enjoy a quiet evening after such a beautiful experience.

The Rangelands Rifts & Sunset Tour Is Worth Doing

The Rangelands Rifts & Sunset Tour is a wonderful blend of geology, scenery, and classic outback atmosphere. Exploring landscapes that are normally inaccessible, learning about the land from knowledgeable guides, and finishing with a sunset drink makes this tour feel both special and unhurried.

For us, it was one of the standout experiences in Winton — a chance to walk through ancient landscapes and watch the day fade over the vast outback horizon. If you’re looking for an easy, scenic, and unforgettable afternoon tour, this one is well worth adding to your itinerary.
