Renmark, South Australia - Food, wine and relaxation in the Riverland
Renmark is the largest town in South Australia’s Riverland region, located around 258 kilometres north-east of Adelaide. Set on a sweeping bend of the Murray River, the town is surrounded by fertile orchards and vineyards and is best known for its fresh produce — particularly oranges and wine grapes — and its strong ties to Australia’s wine industry.
Established in 1887, Renmark has grown into a vibrant regional centre with a beautiful and accessible riverfront, making it a popular holiday destination. Cafés, restaurants, pubs and clubs line the town, offering plenty of opportunities to enjoy local flavours while soaking up relaxed riverside views.
Exploring Renmark’s Riverfront
During our visit to Renmark, we began the day with coffee at Arrosto Coffee, housed in the beautifully restored old Renmark Fire Station. Open daily, this fire-station-themed café is known for great coffee, cakes and a welcoming, family-friendly backyard space.
From here, we wandered along the Matulick Riverfront Trail, which starts near the Visitor Centre and meanders for around 1.75 kilometres along the river’s edge. Interpretive signs along the path share stories of Renmark’s history, early settlement and connection to the Murray, making it both an enjoyable and informative walk.
Historic Buildings and Riverside Icons
Renmark’s riverfront is dotted with historic landmarks that reflect its long-standing connection to the Murray River. The Renmark Hotel, established in 1897, holds the title of Australia’s first and oldest community-owned hotel and remains a popular place to stop for a meal or drink with river views. Nearby, the Renmark Club sits right on the river’s edge. Originally built as a gentlemen’s club in 1909, it has evolved into a welcoming, family-friendly venue while still retaining its historic charm.
At the Taylor Riverfront Precinct, families can cool off at the Harry Clark Water Play Area, while adults enjoy the views from the impressive 24-metre-long deck overlooking the river — a great spot to relax and watch boats glide past.
Riverboats, Roses and Local History
Moored permanently at the wharf is the Murray River Queen, built in 1974 and one of the oldest and largest paddleboats on the river. While no longer cruising, it has been repurposed as unique boutique accommodation and remains a striking part of the riverfront scene.
Nearby, a sculpture commemorates David Ruston, a renowned rose developer who was awarded an Order of Australia in 1984 for services to horticulture. His legacy is closely tied to Renmark and the Riverland’s rich agricultural history.
Paringa and the Headings Cliffs
Just across the river lies the small town of Paringa, easily reached from Renmark. Here, the historic Paringa Bridge dominates the skyline. Built in 1927, this suspension bridge forms part of the Sturt Highway and can still be raised to allow large riverboats to pass beneath it.
Nearby, the Paringa Silo Art adds a splash of colour to the landscape. Painted by artists Jack Fran and Sam Brooks, the artwork features four connected images brought together by soaring pelicans, celebrating the river and surrounding environment.
A short 10-minute drive from Paringa takes you to the Headings Cliffs Lookout, where rich golden limestone cliffs glow in the sunlight. It’s a fantastic spot for photography and offers a striking contrast to the green riverbanks below.
Distilleries, Wineries and More to Explore
Renmark and its surrounds offer plenty more to discover. Other popular attractions include:
Olivewood Historic Homestead and Museum
The Woolshed Brewery at Wilkadene Station, set in historic shearing sheds
Twenty Third Street Distillery
Angove’s Wines and Mallee Estate Winery
Please note: Ruston’s Distillery and Rose Garden are now closed to the public.
