Sea Lake - Silo Art & Salt Lake in Victoria’s Mallee

Sea Lake is a small farming town in Victoria’s remote Mallee region, surrounded by vast landscapes, endless skies and one of the most unique natural wonders in the state. Located around 353 kilometres north-west of Melbourne, Sea Lake has become a must-visit destination thanks to its striking silo art, colourful street murals and its close proximity to Lake Tyrrell, Victoria’s largest salt lake.

It’s a town that surprises you — blending creativity, community spirit and breathtaking natural scenery — and it rewards visitors who take the time to explore both day and night.

Exploring Sea Lake Town Centre

Sea Lake may be small, but it has a lively and welcoming town centre. While wandering around, you’ll find vibrant street art, quirky shopfronts and a relaxed country atmosphere.

The town has several cafés, a community-owned hotel, a supermarket, a hardware store, the Sky Mirror Gallery, and a handful of local shops to browse. There’s also a playground in the main street, making it a comfortable stop for families travelling through the Mallee.

Just along the highway, a well-set-up rest stop provides information boards about the area, along with a nearby caravan park offering powered and unpowered sites, making Sea Lake an easy and practical place to stay overnight.

Sea Lake Silo Art

One of Sea Lake’s biggest drawcards is its impressive silo art, painted by artists The Zookeeper and Drapl in October 2019. The artwork depicts a young girl swinging from a mallee eucalyptus tree, gazing out across the vast landscape of Lake Tyrrell. Above her, a powerful wedge-tailed eagle soars, while emus run through the scene below. The mural beautifully captures the sense of space, imagination and connection to land that defines the Mallee region. Standing beneath the silos, the scale and detail of the artwork are truly striking.

Silo Night Activation

After sunset, Sea Lake’s silos take on a completely different character. Each evening, the silos are transformed into a stunning illuminated artwork through a permanent light projection installation. The 25-minute night activation uses vibrant animations to tell the story of the Mallee — showcasing the landscape, agriculture, changing seasons, Lake Tyrrell and the resilience of the local community. It’s an immersive experience and a highlight of any visit, especially if you’re staying overnight.

The Royal Hotel: A Community Success Story

The historic Royal Hotel is another standout in Sea Lake — not just for a meal, but for its story. Built in 1910, the pub closed its doors in 2017 and sat boarded up as the town’s last operating hotel. In 2018, a group of passionate locals came together to purchase and restore the building for the community. Thanks to incredible local support, the Royal Hotel reopened just six months later in June 2019.

When we visited, we enjoyed dinner in the dining room — a couple of classic chicken schnitzels — and soaked up the warm, welcoming atmosphere that reflects the town’s strong community spirit.

Lake Tyrrell: Reflections, Sunsets & Starry Skies

Just 7 kilometres north of Sea Lake, Lake Tyrrell is Victoria’s largest salt lake and one of the most magical places to visit in the state. Estimated to be around 120,000 years old, the lake is famous for its mirror-like reflections, especially at sunrise and sunset.

At times, the lake turns shades of pink due to red marine phytoplankton, creating an otherworldly landscape that’s popular with photographers. A viewing platform with information boards and a circular boardwalk make it easy to explore.

Lake Tyrrell is also renowned for its stargazing. With vast dark skies and minimal light pollution, it offers incredible views of the Milky Way. You can relax in the Sky Lounge, look up, and enjoy one of the best night-sky experiences in Australia.

Green Lake Regional Park

A short drive from Sea Lake, Green Lake Regional Park offers a change of scenery with its calm waters and natural surrounds. It’s a peaceful spot for picnics, birdwatching and water activities, and a lovely place to slow down after exploring the salt lakes and silos.

Why Sea Lake Is Worth the Journey

Sea Lake is one of those destinations that stays with you long after you leave. From powerful silo art and vibrant night activations to the surreal beauty of Lake Tyrrell and the warmth of a tight-knit community, it offers experiences that feel both creative and deeply connected to the land.

Whether you’re road-tripping through the Mallee, chasing epic sunsets and starry skies, or simply curious to discover one of Victoria’s most unique small towns, Sea Lake is well worth the drive.
