Setting Up Our Motorhome for Off-Grid &

Long-Term Travel

There’s something incredibly freeing about heading off in your motorhome knowing you’re fully set up for off-grid adventures and extended stays. Whether you’re pulling into a quiet bush camp, staying at a family's property, or a remote national park, having the right gear on board makes all the difference between “roughing it” and travelling in total comfort. Over time, we’ve learned that smart preparation is the secret to stress-free long-term motorhome travel — and these are the essentials we never leave home without.

Setting up your motorhome

Stay Powered Anywhere

A long extension lead ensures we can reach distant power points — something we encounter more often than we expect. We have a 30 metre extension cord and find that we definitely need the extra length when we stay at Showgrounds and recreation reserves.

Connect to Domestic Power

The Ampfibian RV-PLUS (15A–10A) is a certified Australian-made safety device that allows us to safely and legally plug a 15A caravan or RV into a standard 10A domestic power outlet. Great for when we are staying on family or friends' property, and we want to plug into their power.

Protect Our Food Supply

When we are travelling, keeping our food safe is a top priority, and a fridge thermometer is an absolute must-have. It helps us monitor the fridge temperature and avoid spoilage. This is especially important in Australia’s hot climate and when running on solar power.

Motorhome Level

A simple bubble level is one of the most underrated motorhome tools. It helps us quickly check whether our motorhome is sitting evenly, which is essential for comfort, proper drainage, and keeping the fridge running efficiently. Ours is on the dash so we can see when we pull up if we are level or need to move.

First Aid Kit

A well-stocked first aid kit is absolutely non-negotiable. When we are travelling far from towns or medical help, being able to handle minor injuries quickly gives us huge peace of mind. It’s one of those items we hope we never need — but it certainly has been handy on several occasions.

Back Up Gas Burner

A portable gas burner gives us flexibility when we want to cook outdoors or keep the heat out of the van. Our gas compartment only fits one gas bottle, and this has been very handy when we run out of gas in the middle of cooking dinner, or when we want to make a quick cuppa on the side of the road.

Gas Kettle

We love our red gas kettle; it's perfect for use inside on the gas cooktop or outside on the portable gas burner. We can enjoy a quick cuppa when we can't find a bakery or cafe in our travels, and we are at a remote campsite.

Reclining Outdoor Chairs

Choosing an outdoor chair is a very personal choice, and we really like reclining camping chairs. It is nice to be able to sit upright at the table or lean back, relax, and enjoy the view. Another thing we needed to consider when purchasing chairs was whether they would fit in the outside hatch.

Multi-Height Table

Long-term travel isn’t just about getting from place to place — it’s about enjoying where you stop. We also work whilst travelling and found this sturdy multi-height table to be incredibly versatile for cooking, dining, and working outdoors.

The Secret to Stress-Free Long-Term Travel

Setting up your motorhome for off-grid adventures isn’t about carrying everything — it’s about carrying the right things. With a thoughtful setup, you can stay longer in beautiful places, travel more comfortably, and enjoy the freedom that motorhome life is all about.

Because in the end, the goal isn’t just to travel — it’s to feel completely at home wherever the road takes you.

Where We Buy Our Gear

Many of the items we use on the road come from Snowys Camping & Outdoor Store, a trusted Australian retailer specialising in camping and outdoor equipment.
