Silver Falls, Tasmania - A Peaceful Waterfall near Hobart

Silver Falls is a charming little waterfall tucked away on the lower slopes of kunanyi / Mount Wellington, just a short drive from Hobart. While modest in size, dropping around four metres, this pretty cascade feels wonderfully secluded, surrounded by lush forest and the gentle sounds of flowing water.

The falls are formed as the Browns River spills over a rocky ledge before continuing its winding journey down the mountain. After rain, the water flow is at its best, making Silver Falls a lovely spot to pause and enjoy the tranquillity of the bush.

An Easy and Scenic Walk

There are several ways to reach Silver Falls, making it a flexible option for walkers of varying abilities. We chose to start near the Fern Tree Tavern, which is a popular access point for many Mount Wellington walks.

From here:

  • Follow the Pipeline Track for approximately 1 kilometre

  • Turn onto the Silver Falls Track near the Fern Tree Bower

  • Continue along the river through the forest to the falls

The walk is mostly gentle and shaded, passing beneath tall eucalypts, tree ferns, and mossy undergrowth. The sound of the river accompanies you along much of the way, adding to the peaceful atmosphere. The final section of the track is a little steeper, but it’s short and manageable, and you’ll soon arrive at Silver Falls.

A Quiet Nature Escape

Silver Falls may not be large or dramatic, but that’s part of its appeal. It’s a perfect destination for:

  • A short nature walk

  • A quiet moment in the forest

  • Combining with other nearby Mount Wellington walks

  • Escaping the city without travelling far

Because it’s less well known than some of Hobart’s larger waterfalls, Silver Falls often feels calm and uncrowded — especially on weekdays.

Best Time to Visit

Silver Falls is seasonal, so it’s best visited after rainfall, when the Browns River is flowing well. Autumn and winter are particularly lovely, with lush greenery and fewer people on the tracks.

Directions to Mount Wellington / Fern Tree

From Hobart: Head south-east on Murray Street toward Bidencopes Lane. Use the right lanes to turn right onto Davey Street (A6) and continue for 1.3 kilometres. Continue straight along Davey Street (B64) for a further 7.2 kilometres. Turn sharp right onto Pillinger Drive (C616). Follow this road for 8.1 kilometres toward Mount Wellington / Fern Tree. Parking is available near the Fern Tree area, close to the start of the walking tracks.

Final Thoughts

Silver Falls is a gentle reminder that some of Hobart’s most rewarding nature experiences are found just minutes from the city. With its easy access, shaded forest track, and peaceful setting, it’s a lovely short walk to add to any visit to Mount Wellington.
