Trentham Falls is set within the beautiful Coliban River Scenic Reserve in Victoria, also known as Trentham Falls Scenic Reserve, just outside the historic town of Trentham, approximately 95 kilometres north-west of Melbourne.

It is one of Victoria’s longest single-drop waterfalls, plunging an impressive 32 metres over striking ancient basalt columns into the gorge below.

The 24-hectare reserve protects a rich and diverse natural environment, with more than 80 species of indigenous plants. Towering manna gums, stringybarks, messmates, and narrow-leaved peppermint trees line the walking tracks, while colourful wildflowers brighten the reserve in spring.

Some of the largest remaining eucalyptus trees in the district can also be found here. These giants provide important habitat for nocturnal mammals and a wide variety of birdlife, making the reserve just as rewarding for wildlife lovers as it is for waterfall seekers.

The Walk - 140 metres return - 5 minutes - Grade 1

The walk to the Trentham Falls lookout starts at the carpark and takes you down a short 70-metre path, with a few steps to the viewing area.

You will see an information board at the beginning of the viewing area, which explains the geology of Trentham Falls. The viewing area is fenced and is quite large, so you can safely enjoy lovely views of the falls, which is excellent as this waterfall is very popular.

Tips for Visiting Trentham Falls

• Easy short walk: From the carpark, it’s a short stroll of approximately 70 metres to the main lookout, with options to take steps or a gently sloped gravel path.

• Wear sturdy shoes: Paths can be uneven and slippery, particularly after rain, so comfortable walking shoes are recommended.

• Best time for flow: The falls are most impressive after rainfall. Winter and Spring usually provide the strongest water flow and lush surrounding greenery.

• Picnic friendly: There are picnic tables and fireplaces within the reserve, making it a lovely spot for a relaxed lunch under the eucalypt trees. Bring your own firewood if you plan to use the fireplaces, and check that there is no fire ban in place.

• Dog-friendly: Dogs are welcome but must be kept on a leash at all times.

• Facilities: Basic toilet facilities and picnic areas are located near the carpark.

• No access to the base of the falls: There is no access to the base or top of Trentham Falls due to unstable cliffs and safety concerns. Visitors can only view the waterfall from the designated platforms and must stay on formed tracks and behind safety barriers.

Best Time to Visit Trentham Falls

Trentham Falls is at its most spectacular after rainfall, when the Coliban River is flowing strongly over the basalt cliffs. Winter and spring are generally the best seasons to visit, with cooler temperatures, greener surroundings, and more powerful water flow.

In summer and early autumn, the falls can slow to a gentle trickle during dry periods, but the reserve still offers a peaceful bush setting and excellent birdlife. Early mornings and weekdays are ideal if you prefer a quieter visit, while overcast days often provide the best lighting for photography without harsh shadows.

Directions to Trentham Falls

From Trentham, drive along High Street and turn slightly right as High Street becomes Falls Road. Continue 1.5 kilometres along Falls Road and turn right into Trentham Falls Road. Follow this road for 700 metres to the carpark.
