Waltzing Matilda Centre, Winton - Where Australia’s Song Tells Its Story

Standing proudly on Winton’s main street, in Outback Queensland, the Waltzing Matilda Centre is a place where music, history, and outback life come together. As the world’s first museum dedicated to a song, it celebrates Australia’s unofficial anthem while also telling the wider story of Winton and the remarkable events that shaped this part of Outback Queensland. It’s immersive, emotional, and a must-visit when exploring Winton.

A Museum Like No Other

The Waltzing Matilda Centre is the only museum in the world dedicated to a single song. Through state-of-the-art displays, multimedia exhibits, and interactive storytelling, it brings the story of Waltzing Matilda to life — from its creation by Banjo Paterson in 1895 to its lasting place in Australian culture.

The Centre is open daily and also houses the Winton Visitor Information Centre, Tuckerbox Café, a gift shop, toilets, and a shaded outdoor eating area, making it an easy and enjoyable place to spend several hours.

Exploring the Exhibits

On our visit, we spent several hours wandering through the Waltzing Matilda Centre and the adjoining Qantilda Museum. The layout is intuitive and engaging, with a series of interactive displays that explore not only the song itself but the broader history of the Winton Shire.

The exhibits cover pivotal moments and stories, including:

  • The Great Shearers’ Strike of 1891

  • The birth of QANTAS in Winton

  • Aboriginal cultural history

  • Opal mining in the region

  • Dinosaurs and the Winton Dinosaur Trail

Each section builds a deeper understanding of how this small outback town played such an important role in Australian history.

The Waltzing Matilda Room

In the Waltzing Matilda Room, which was a highlight of the visit. Inside, you’ll find an impressive collection of Waltzing Matilda records, sheet music, and memorabilia from around the world.

One of the most fascinating items on display is a copy of Banjo Paterson’s original poem, offering a tangible connection to the moment when Australia’s most famous song was born. Listening stations and audiovisual displays help bring the lyrics and their meaning to life.

From Tragedy to Triumph

The original Waltzing Matilda Centre opened in 1998, created to celebrate the song that was first publicly performed in Winton. Sadly, in 2015, a devastating fire destroyed the museum and much of its collection.

Rising from the ashes, the Centre was rebuilt and reopened in 2018, emerging as a striking modern building that now tells a much broader story. Today’s museum is not only about Waltzing Matilda but also about resilience, community, and the rich layers of history that define Winton and Outback Queensland.

Why the Waltzing Matilda Centre Is a Must-Visit

The Waltzing Matilda Centre is far more than a music museum — it’s a journey through Australia’s identity. From shearers and songwriters to aviators and ancient landscapes, the stories told here are deeply woven into the fabric of the nation.

For us, it was one of the most engaging and informative experiences in Winton. Whether you’re passionate about Australian history, music, or simply curious about the stories behind the places you visit, the Waltzing Matilda Centre offers a meaningful and memorable insight into the heart of the outback.
