Woodford, Queensland - Folk Festivals, Country Railways & Stony Creek

Just 85 kilometres north of Brisbane, Woodford is a welcoming country town with a creative soul and a proud rural heart. Best known as the home of the famous Woodford Folk Festival, this historic town in Queensland offers far more than its end-of-year celebrations. With heritage railways, leafy streets, public art, cattle sales, and nearby swimming holes, Woodford is a relaxed destination where country traditions and community creativity come together beautifully.

A Country Town with Character

Woodford is instantly appealing, with wide, tree-lined streets, colonial-style shopfronts, cosy cafés, and plenty of personality. There’s a strong sense of community here, and it doesn’t take long to feel like you’ve slowed to Woodford’s easy pace.

We spent a few days in town, we rode on the heritage train and wandered around Woodford Gardens Cafe. On Monday, we visited the cattle sales, saw the Leopard Tank, admired the street art, and explored Stony Creek.

All Aboard the Woodford Heritage Railway

One of Woodford’s standout experiences is its connection to Australia’s railway history. The town is home to one of the country’s largest collections of narrow-gauge steam, diesel, and petrol locomotives.

On the first and third Sundays of each month, between 10:00 am and 3:00 pm, visitors can enjoy a heritage train ride through town. We wandered around the station admiring the railway memorabilia before climbing aboard for a scenic journey.

The short ride took us out to Woodford Gardens Cafe, a lovely stop surrounded by gardens.

Gardens, Crafts & a Scenic Return Ride

After disembarking, we explored the gardens around the café and browsed the local arts and crafts market stalls set up nearby. It’s a relaxed and colourful space that pairs perfectly with the slow rhythm of the heritage train.

We then hopped back on for the return trip to the station — the full round journey taking around 15 minutes, but leaving us with lasting memories.

Cattle Sales & Country Traditions

On Monday, we headed to Woodford’s weekly cattle sales, a long-running tradition that offers a glimpse into the region’s agricultural backbone. Watching the auctioneers at work and the steady rhythm of the sales was a reminder that Woodford remains very much a working country town.

Memorials, Tanks & Town Art

Near the cattle yards in Woodford Memorial Park, we came across an AS1 Leopard Tank, displayed as a memorial to Australia’s service men and women. The decommissioned tank is an impressive sight — 7 metres long and weighing 42 tonnes — and adds an unexpected layer to the park.

Not far away, the town’s water tower has been transformed into a castle-like structure, featuring ten illuminated artworks in lightboxes that reflect different aspects of the Woodford community.

Street Art & the Bandicoot Trail

As we wandered through the town centre, we followed a tree-shaded pathway lined with creatively painted bollards. Each one features stanzas from Bandicoot Dreaming, a poem by Mark Feldman. The long-nosed bandicoot is Woodford’s cheeky local icon, appearing throughout the artwork — and even on the water tower — adding a playful and distinctly local touch to the streetscape.

Stony Creek: A Natural Escape

A short drive from town leads to Stony Creek, located around 10 kilometres from Woodford within Bellthorpe National Park. The day-use area has grassy picnic spots, tables, and toilets. From there, a short, flat walk brings you to a large natural swimming hole surrounded by bushland — the perfect place to cool off on a warm Queensland day.

Why Woodford Is Worth the Visit

Woodford blends creativity, heritage, and country life in a way that feels genuine and welcoming. From riding historic trains and wandering leafy streets to exploring local art, cattle sales, and creekside swimming holes, it’s a town that rewards those who take the time to explore.

Whether you’re visiting for the Folk Festival or stopping by on a quieter weekend, Woodford offers a relaxed and richly layered country experience just beyond Brisbane.
