Woodgate, Queensland - A Peaceful Beach Escape Near Bundaberg

Set along Queensland’s quiet Burrum Coast, Woodgate is a relaxed seaside town where life revolves around the beach. Located 360 kilometres north of Brisbane and just 30 kilometres south of Bundaberg, this coastal gem is known for its unspoilt shoreline, gentle waters and laid-back atmosphere. With a 16-kilometre stretch of protected beach, Woodgate is the perfect destination for travellers looking to slow down and soak up simple seaside pleasures.

When we stayed in Woodgate, we explored the town and the beach, discovered Theodolite Creek, and wandered along the Banksia walk. We stayed at the NRMA caravan park, which is right on the Esplanade.

Sixteen Kilometres of Unspoilt Beach

Woodgate’s greatest drawcard is its long, pristine beach, stretching uninterrupted for 16 kilometres. With calm, clear water and soft golden sand, it’s ideal for swimming, walking, fishing or simply relaxing. Even during busier times, there’s always plenty of space to find your own quiet patch.

We loved wandering along the shoreline, enjoying the sound of the waves and taking refreshing dips in the gentle surf. It’s the kind of beach that invites long walks at sunrise and peaceful afternoons under a beach umbrella.

Life Along the Esplanade

The Woodgate Esplanade is the heart of town, lined with grassy areas, picnic shelters, seating, BBQs and public toilets — perfect for easy beach days.

Food options are simple and satisfying:

  • Woodgate Childers Bakery, open from 7.00 am daily, is a favourite stop for fresh bread and baked treats.

  • A fresh fish van visits several days a week, offering locally caught seafood.

  • The Woodgate Beach General Store, open from 8.00 am, serves coffee, snacks, takeaway meals and pizza. We enjoyed classic battered fish and chips while looking out over the ocean.

  • Further along the Esplanade, the Woodgate Beach Hotel & Caravan Park is open daily from 10.00 am, and the town also has a small supermarket for essentials.

Theodolite Creek – Calm Waters and Wildlife

Just 4 kilometres north of Woodgate, Theodolite Creek is well worth a visit. Accessed via a sealed road, it has a large car park and boat ramp and is a popular spot for fishing, birdwatching, swimming, kayaking and paddleboarding.

The grassy foreshore is beautifully set up with picnic tables, BBQs and toilets, making it an easy place to spend a few relaxed hours surrounded by nature.

Walking the Banksia Track

For a change of scenery, head into Burrum Coast National Park to walk the Banksia Track. This peaceful trail winds through coastal wetlands and native bushland rich in birdlife — we even spotted kookaburras near the start of the walk.

You can choose between:

  • A short 800-metre boardwalk stroll, perfect for an easy wander

  • Or the full 5.2-kilometre loop, which takes around 2 hours and offers a deeper immersion into the coastal environment

Staying at Woodgate Beach

We stayed at the NRMA Woodgate Beach Caravan Park, perfectly positioned right on the Esplanade. The park offers cabins, villas, powered and unpowered sites, all set among shady trees and grassy grounds.

Facilities include two amenities blocks, a laundry, camp kitchen and a café at the front of the park — making it a comfortable and convenient base for exploring the area.

Why Woodgate Is So Easy to Love

Woodgate is all about simplicity — long empty beaches, gentle water, friendly locals and an unhurried pace of life. Whether you’re camping by the sea, exploring nearby creeks and walking tracks, or just enjoying fish and chips with an ocean view, Woodgate is a coastal escape that leaves you feeling refreshed and relaxed.
