Albury Wodonga Top 10 Things to Do ~ NSW / Victoria

The lovely twin cities of Albury and Wodonga are situated on either side of the Murray River. They are approximately 300 kilometres north-east of Melbourne and 580 kilometres south-west of Sydney.


Albury and Wodonga have wonderful heritage sites, a thriving art scene, and great parks and gardens.

Albury Botanic Gardens


The Albury Botanic Gardens are on the corner of Dean and Smollett Streets in Albury and are open every day from 6.30 am to sunset.


They were established in 1877, and you can wander along the lovely paths surrounded by flowering plants, lush rainforest plants and heritage trees.


There is also a lovely Children's Garden that is open six days a week from 8.30 am to sunset, it is closed on Wednesdays.


Located amidst the shade and beauty of the gardens, The Children's Garden is a lovely, shady fenced space that offers a variety of fun features for children to explore, including a life-sized dinosaur and a troll cave.

Monument Hill


Monument Hill is located at the western end of Dean Street, and it offers stunning views over Albury and is home to the city's iconic War Memorial. 


The War Memorial sits at the top of Monument Hill and was unveiled on Anzac Day in 1925 in dedication to the men and women who served in World War l.


The structure is 30.48 metres high and is constructed of reinforced concrete. Around the site, there are commemorative plaques, picnic tables and walking tracks.

Visit the Hume Dam


The spectacular Hume Dam is located 16 kilometres east of Albury-Wodonga.


When it was completed in 1936, the Hume Dam was the biggest in the southern hemisphere and one of the largest in the world. It holds around six times the amount of water as Sydney Harbour.


Today, you can wander along the dam wall, relax on the foreshore or try your luck at fishing. The lake is also used for wakeboarding, water skiing, tube-riding, and stand-up paddleboarding.

Keep your eyes open as you stroll around Albury and Wodonga, as both cities have a vibrant arts community.


You will see colourful murals and interesting sculptures on the streets and hidden down laneways, the local street art scene tells modern stories with bold visual impact.


The Porta Balls sculpture overlooking the River Murray links the two cities together.

Bonegilla Migrant Experience


The Bonegilla Migrant Experience is located approximately 15 minutes from Albury-Wodonga and is open daily from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm.


Bonegilla Migrant Reception and Training Centre once spanned 24 blocks and had its own churches, banks, cinema and hospital.  Today, only Block 19 remains, and it has been preserved as part of the Bonegilla Migrant Experience.


As you explore Block 19, you will learn the migrant's stories through videos, exhibitions, original buildings, and interactive displays.


Established after World War II, Bonegilla housed over 300,000 migrants between 1947 and 1971, mainly from non-English speaking European countries.


It was originally an army camp, but it became Australia’s largest and longest-running post-war migrant centre. For many, Bonegilla was a place of uncertainty; for others, it represented hope and a new beginning.

Murray Art Museum Albury (MAMA)


MAMA is a vibrant contemporary art gallery in the heart of Albury, it is open daily from 10.00 am. 


MAMA has a great reputation for its innovative and original exhibitions, featuring some of Australia’s and the world's best contemporary artists.


The iconic building combines heritage features with light-filled contemporary spaces, and has up to six exhibitions at any time, MAMA focuses on living artists, stories and ideas that are relevant today.

Yindyamarra Sculpture Walk


The Yindyamarra Sculpture Trail is a 5.3 kilometre circuit that starts on Kremur Street and meanders along to the Wonga Wetlands.


As you wander along the trail near the Murray River, you will discover large-scale contemporary sculptures by Aboriginal artists. 


15 sculptures along the trail tell First Nations stories through contemporary art and each has an interpretative sign with the artist's details and the sculpture's significance.

Albury Historic Buildings


The Albury City Centre streets are lined with grand 19th and 20th-century heritage buildings. You can pick up a brochure at the visitors centre to learn more about them.


The Albury Railway Station was built in the grand Italianate style with a 22-metre clock tower and was first used in February 1882. The Station’s platform is more than 450 metres long and is one of Australia’s longest.


The Albury Post Office was built in 1885 in the Victorian Free Classical style with an impressive clock tower.


The Albury Court House in Dean Street was constructed in 1860 in the elegant "Classical Revival" style.


The Mate’s Building is one of the City’s most iconic buildings. The original building was destroyed by fire in 1915 and replaced with the current building in 1916.


The Colonial Mutual Life Building, with its five-story clock tower, is another of Albury’s prestigious commercial buildings. It was built in 1925 and extended to its present size in 1938.


The Australian Building was built in 1911 in the Commercial Federation style and has an Australian coat of arms on the facade.


The elegant Edwardian Town Hall was built in 1907 and is now part of the Murray Art Museum of Albury.

Huon Hill Lookout


The Huon Hill Lookout is approximately 10 kilometres from Wodonga and has fantastic panoramic views.


There are several lookout areas with information boards about what you can see.


Huon Hill is 263 metres above the Murray and Kiewa floodplains, and has great views of Lake Hume, the Kiewa Valley, the Murray River, and Albury and Wodonga.


There are picnic tables, toilets and walking trails if you are keen to explore the surrounding bushland.

Albury Wodonga Farmers Market


The Albury Wodonga Farmers Market is on every Saturday morning, from 8.00 am to 12.00 noon at the Gateway Village on the Lincoln Causeway, Wodonga.


This bustling market features local growers and makers offering fresh produce, artisan bread, handmade treats, and more. It’s the perfect place to enjoy the region's flavours and meet the passionate producers behind them.
