Crystal Cascades - Cool Rainforest Swimming Holes Close to Cairns

Just a 20-minute drive from Cairns city into the leafy Redlynch Valley, Crystal Cascades is one of Far North Queensland’s most loved natural swimming spots. Tucked away in the rainforest along Freshwater Creek, this series of cascading waterfalls and clear rock pools offers an easy and refreshing escape from the tropical heat.

With shaded walking tracks, smooth granite boulders and cool flowing water, Crystal Cascades is a favourite with locals and visitors alike — perfect for swimming, picnicking or simply enjoying the sounds of the rainforest.

A Series of Cascades & Rock Pools

Crystal Cascades is made up of a collection of small waterfalls and natural swimming holes formed as Freshwater Creek flows down from the mountains. The water tumbles over granite ledges and gathers in beautifully shaped rock pools, many of which are shaded by dense rainforest canopy.

Even in the hottest months, the water remains refreshingly cool, making Crystal Cascades an ideal place to swim year-round.

An Easy Rainforest Walk

From the car park, a well-maintained 1.2-kilometre walking track follows the creek upstream to the main cascade area. The paved path is easy to follow and passes several viewing platforms and access points where you can step down into the water along the way.

The walk itself is a highlight, winding through lush rainforest with plenty of opportunities to pause, listen to the flowing water and spot local birdlife.
