Great Keppel Island - Beaches, Snorkelling & the Perfect Day Trip to Paradise
Great Keppel Island sits in the heart of the Southern Great Barrier Reef, just 15 kilometres off the coast of Yeppoon, in Queensland, yet it feels a world away. As the largest island in the Keppel Group, it’s fringed by 17 stunning white-sand beaches, crystal-clear water and easy walking tracks that link one idyllic bay to the next.
Great Keppel Island's close proximity to the mainland and regular ferry transfers make Great Keppel Island the perfect destination for a relaxed and rewarding day trip.
On our recent day trip to Great Keppel Island with Keppel Konnections, we wandered over to stunning Long Beach and then went snorkelling at Monkey Beach. We enjoyed lunch at Hideaway Bay Bar and Bistro and relaxed on Fisherman’s Beach before returning to the mainland.
The Easy Ferry Ride to Island Time
Our day started at Keppel Marina, where there’s plenty of free parking for the day. The Keppel Konnections ferries depart from near the Waterline Restaurant, so we grabbed a coffee and muffin while waiting to board. We departed the mainland at 9:00 am, and just 30 minutes later, we stepped off the ferry and onto the soft white sand of Fisherman’s Beach. It’s hard not to feel instantly relaxed the moment your feet hit the sand.
Picking Up Snorkel Gear & Island Tips
Our first stop was the small blue GKI Watersports and Activities hut, located between Fisherman’s Beach and Putney Beach. Here, we picked up snorkelling gear and chatted with the friendly staff, who gave us helpful directions and tips on the best spots to visit on the island. With snorkelling gear sorted, we headed back across Fisherman’s Beach to begin our island walk.
Walking to Long Beach - White Sand & Quiet Corners
We followed the sandy walking track toward Long Beach, an undulating trail that winds through native bushland with pockets of shade along the way. Some sections are quite sandy, so sturdy footwear is a must.
Long Beach is regularly listed among Australia’s top beaches, and it’s easy to see why. Stretching for two kilometres, it features pristine white sand, turquoise water and a wonderfully peaceful atmosphere. Trees line the back of the beach, offering plenty of shade, and it’s the perfect place to slow down and simply enjoy being there.
Long Beach is also the only nudist beach on Great Keppel Island, although there’s plenty of space for everyone to enjoy the beach comfortably.
Monkey Beach - Snorkelling Straight from the Shore
From Long Beach, we wandered along the shoreline to the boardwalk and over the headland to Monkey Beach. This is one of the most popular spots on the island, and for good reason — you can snorkel directly from the beach.
Monkey Beach sits within a protected green zone, meaning fishing is not allowed, and the marine life here is abundant. We spent time snorkelling in the clear water and were rewarded with colourful reef fish and even a sea turtle gliding past — a definite highlight of the day.
The Scenic Return Walk
After snorkelling, we tackled the hilly “goat track” back toward Fisherman’s Beach. The climb is worth it for the views, with lovely glimpses through the trees back across the bays and beaches we’d just explored.
The full loop from Fisherman’s Beach to Long Beach, across to Monkey Beach and back again is around five kilometres. Comfortable walking shoes or hiking boots are highly recommended.
Lunch with a View at Hideaway Bar & Bistro
By the time we returned to Fisherman’s Beach, we were more than ready for lunch. We headed to the Great Keppel Island Hideaway Bar and Bistro, where lunch was included as part of our ferry package.
We enjoyed classic island fare — fish and chips and a chicken burger with chips — washed down with icy-cold soft drinks. Sitting back and refuelling after a big morning of walking and snorkelling felt well earned.
A Relaxing Ferry Ride Home
After lunch, we spent a little more time relaxing on the beach before boarding the ferry for the return trip to the mainland. The ride back was calm and comfortable, giving us time to reflect on a day that felt like a proper island escape — without the need for an overnight stay.
Why Great Keppel Island Is the Perfect Day Trip
Great Keppel Island offers everything you want from a tropical island getaway — stunning beaches, easy walking tracks, accessible snorkelling, good food and a relaxed atmosphere — all just a short ferry ride from Yeppoon.
Whether you’re visiting the Capricorn Coast or travelling through Central Queensland, a day trip to Great Keppel Island is an unforgettable experience and one of the easiest ways to enjoy the beauty of the Southern Great Barrier Reef.
