Lake Lascelles, Hopetoun ~ Victoria
Lake Lascelles is a man-made lake that was originally created as a water storage reservoir for the town of Hopetoun.
It is only 500 metres from Hopetoun and is a popular destination for camping, water sports, and relaxation.
Hopetoun and Lake Lascelles are located approximately 400 kilometres northwest of Melbourne in the Mallee region of Victoria.
Camping & Ammenities
Unpowered Sites
We prefer to camp in the unpowered section on the lake's edge, and some of these spots feature a fire pit equipped with a cooking plate.
Camping is available all around the Lake Lascelles waterfront, as well as in the bush areas behind.
It is $5.00 per adult to camp in this section, and children are free. You can pop your money in the donation box near the main shower block.
Powered sites
There are 12 powered sites available for $30 per night, you can’t book a site it is first in best, dressed. But once you have arrived and secured a site, you need to pay with the QR code located at your site or by putting cash in the donation box.
The powered sites also overlook the lake and are closer to the main amenities block and camp kitchen.
Ammenities
Near the powered sites in the main amenities block, which is a bit rustic and has unisex toilets and hot showers.
There are also more amenities blocks with hot showers and toilets located at various points around the lake.
There is also a camp kitchen with a sink, fridge, BBQ, vending machine, table and chairs.
Other Accommodation
Lake Lascelles also has a range of cabin-style accommodation that reflects the rugged charm of the Mallee, with corrugated iron, timber accents, and simple, sturdy lines that honour the region’s pioneering farming heritage.
A passionate volunteer committee proudly maintains the Lake Lascelles Cabins and Camping areas.

The camping spots are easily accessible for motorhomes.
We had good Telstra mobile coverage when we stayed.

Hopetoun
It is an easy 500 metre walk into the friendly town of Hopetoun that has an IGA supermarket, petrol station, chemist, post office, bakery, café and a hotel.
There is a lovely picnic area with an interesting mural in the centre of town near the IGA Supermarket.
Things to do at Lake Lascelles
Lake Lascelles has a boat ramp that is located at the end of Austin Street, and the boating rules and regulations are on display near the boat ramp.
You can also try your luck at fishing as Lake Lascelles and the adjacent Willow Lake have a variety of fish including Redfin, Cod, Brim, Catfish and Yellow Belly. You can also swim in the lake, kayak on the lake or just relax under the shady trees.
An Evening at Lake Lascelles
In the late afternoon, we decided to get the fire started.
When we stayed, the local cricket club members drove around the lake with firewood available in the back of their ute, and it was $20 for 20 kilograms.
Once the fire was going and we had some coals, I started cooking the Naan bread on the hotplate.
Earlier in the day, when we walked into Hopetoun, we popped into the Meals Box Coffee Shop and picked up a couple of takeaway curries.
The Meals Box Coffee Shop is open every day and has a great range of homemade curries.
While I cooked the Naan bread, Sandy cooked up some basmati rice and warmed up the Lamb Curry and the Butter Chicken in the Motorhome.
We totally enjoyed our curries by the campfire and watching a stunning sunset.
