Tucked away in the remote highlands near Lake Leake, Meetus Falls is one of Tasmania’s most impressive and lesser-known waterfalls. Set within the Meetus Falls Reserve, this dramatic cascade sees the Cygnet River plunge around 40 metres over a rocky cliff into the deep gorge below.

Permanent and flowing year-round, Meetus Falls is at its most spectacular after rain, when the sound of rushing water echoes through the forest and mist rises from the gorge. Its secluded location and rugged surroundings make it a rewarding stop for those willing to venture a little off the beaten track.

A Remote and Wild Setting

Meetus Falls feels wonderfully wild and untouched. Surrounded by tall forest and rugged terrain, the reserve has a quiet, remote atmosphere that’s very different from Tasmania’s more accessible waterfalls. Facilities are basic, adding to the sense of adventure, and the area is best suited to visitors who enjoy exploring Tasmania’s less-visited natural places.

Walking to Meetus Falls

Distance: 500 metres return - Time: Approximately 20 minutes - Grade: Moderate

The walk to Meetus Falls begins near the picnic shelter in the reserve.

To the left of the shelter, you’ll see signage pointing towards the Meetus Falls viewing platform, as well as another sign directing walkers to the Cygnet River at the base of the falls.

The track to the viewing platform is a rough bush track, descending downhill through forest. It is rocky and steep in sections, so sturdy footwear is essential, and care should be taken, especially after rain. At the end of the track, you’ll reach the viewing platform, which offers excellent views across the gorge to the full height of Meetus Falls as it thunders over the cliff.

Meetus Falls is not a waterfall you stumble upon by chance — getting here requires a little planning and care — but that’s part of its appeal. The combination of height, year-round flow, and remote bush setting makes it one of Tasmania’s more dramatic hidden waterfalls.

Directions to Meetus Falls

From Campbell Town, turn east onto the Lake Leake Highway (B34) and drive for approximately 35 kilometres. At the intersection with McKays Road, turn left and continue for around 11 kilometres. This road is unsealed and frequently used by logging trucks, so drive with caution.

You’ll then see signage for the Meetus Falls Picnic Area. The final 2 kilometres of road are rough, with deep potholes. A 4WD vehicle is strongly recommended for this section, particularly after wet weather.
