Millstream Falls, Queensland - See One of Australia’s Widest Waterfalls
Located near Ravenshoe in the heart of the Atherton Tablelands, in Far North Queensland. Millstream Falls is a waterfall that impresses not with height, but with sheer width and power. Often described as one of the widest single-drop waterfalls in Australia, this dramatic cascade spreads across a vast basalt cliff, creating a breathtaking curtain of water after rain. Easily accessible and beautifully set within Millstream Falls National Park, it’s a must-see stop when exploring Queensland’s Wet Tropics.
A Waterfall Shaped by Fire and Water
Millstream Falls pours over a striking columnar basalt lava cliff, formed by ancient volcanic activity. Unlike many waterfalls in the Wet Tropics, the surrounding landscape here is dry open woodland dominated by eucalyptus trees. This unique environment exists due to a rain shadow created by the Great Dividing Range, giving the area a very different feel from the dense rainforests found elsewhere on the Tablelands.
The contrast between dark volcanic rock, flowing water and open woodland makes Millstream Falls a fascinating and photogenic location.
An Easy Walk to an Impressive View
Reaching Millstream Falls couldn’t be easier. From the carpark, a well-formed walking track leads approximately 680 metres one way to a viewing platform overlooking the falls. The platform offers sweeping views across the entire width of the cascade, making it the perfect place to pause, take photos and appreciate the scale of this natural wonder.
Picnic Facilities and a Relaxed Setting
Near the carpark, you’ll find picnic tables and toilets, making Millstream Falls an ideal stop for families, road-trippers and anyone looking to enjoy a relaxed break in nature. The open woodland setting and easy access mean you can enjoy the area without committing to a long or strenuous walk.
Getting to Millstream Falls
Millstream Falls is located within Millstream Falls National Park, just 4.5 kilometres from Ravenshoe along the Kennedy Highway in Far North Queensland.
The falls are well signposted, and ample parking is available, including space suitable for coaches and motorhomes, making this an easy and convenient stop on an Atherton Tablelands itinerary.
Visiting Tips
Best after rain – the wider the flow, the more spectacular the falls.
Arrive mid-morning or late afternoon for softer light for photos.
Bring water and sun protection – the area is more open with very little shade.
Allow time for a picnic if you want to relax and enjoy the surroundings.
Stay behind barriers at the lookout for safety.
Why Millstream Falls Should Be on Your List
Millstream Falls offers a very different waterfall experience — wide, powerful and shaped by Queensland’s volcanic past. With its easy access, unique landscape and impressive scale, it’s one of the standout natural attractions on the Atherton Tablelands and a highlight of Far North Queensland.
