The Wonderful Montana Falls.

Montana Falls, Tasmania - A Relaxing Forest Walk near Deloraine

Hidden away in the quiet countryside near Deloraine, Montana Falls is a lovely little waterfall walk that feels far removed from the busier Tasmanian tracks. Set within the Long Ridge Regional Reserve, this gentle forest hike leads to a broad rock-face waterfall on Western Creek that truly comes alive after rain. It’s a peaceful spot, perfect for those who enjoy understated beauty and tranquil bush settings.

A Waterfall Best Seen After Rain

Montana Falls isn’t tall or dramatic, but what it lacks in height it makes up for in character. After good rainfall, water spills across the wide rock shelf, fanning out as it tumbles down into the creek below. The surrounding forest amplifies the sound of rushing water, creating a calm, immersive atmosphere.

If you continue along the track beyond the main falls, you’ll also discover a series of smaller cascades further downstream, known as the Montana Cascades, which are lovely to explore from the creek banks.

The Montana Falls Walk – What to Expect

Distance: 1.8 kilometres return - Time: Around 1.5 hours - Grade: 3

The walk begins from the roadside near Long Ridge Regional Reserve on Leonard’s Road. From the parking area, a sign clearly marks the start of the Montana Falls track.

Early in the walk, the track veers left at the first set of orange markers and winds through low bracken on a narrow but well-defined path. As you continue, the forest gradually changes, and the track begins a gentle descent through banksia, gum trees and blackwood.

After around 15–20 minutes, you’ll reach the waterfall. Timber steps lead down to the base, allowing you to view Montana Falls up close and enjoy the peaceful creek setting.

Exploring Beyond the Falls

For those wanting a little extra adventure, the track continues past the main falls to the Montana Cascades, a series of small, pretty water features further along Western Creek.

It’s important not to cross the creek at Montana Falls, as the land on the opposite side is private property.

Getting to Montana Falls

From Deloraine, drive along the B12 towards Mole Creek. After approximately 5 kilometres, turn left onto Montana Road and continue for another 4 kilometres, passing the 41 Degrees South Salmon Farm. Turn left into Leonard’s Road and drive for about 800 metres. You’ll see a sign for Long Ridge Regional Reserve on the left, where you can park safely along the roadside.

Why Visit Montana Falls?

Montana Falls is the kind of place you visit when you want a quiet walk, fresh forest air, and a waterfall without the crowds. It’s especially rewarding after rain, when the creek is flowing strongly, and the cascades are at their best.

If you’re exploring the Deloraine and Mole Creek region and looking for a lesser-known waterfall walk, Montana Falls is a gentle, rewarding detour worth adding to your itinerary.
