A Walk Through Tasmania’s Rainforest

The walk to Philosopher Falls follows a gently undulating track that traces the route of an old water race, once used during Waratah’s mining era. This historic feature adds another layer of interest as you make your way through the unspoilt rainforest.

Distance: 2 kilometres return - Time: Approximately 1 to 1.5 hours - Grade: 3

The track is well-defined and gently undulating for most of the way before descending around 200 steps to the falls lookout. While the stairs add a bit of effort, they are well worth it for the stunning view waiting at the end.

At the base of the steps, you’ll reach the Philosopher Falls lookout, where you can admire the waterfall cascading down the rocky cliffs into the lush gorge below. The falls are particularly impressive after rainfall, when water flows strongly over each tier.

Directions to Philosopher Falls

From Waratah, head south on William Street (B23) towards English Street and continue for approximately 9.6 kilometres.

Turn right onto Butler’s Road and follow it for around 1.5 kilometres until you reach the car park. Butler’s Road is unsealed, but is generally suitable for 2WD vehicles in dry conditions.
