Tucked away in the forested depths of the Forth River region in north-west Tasmania, Preston Falls is a beautiful and easily accessible waterfall just 15 minutes south of Ulverstone. Plunging into the steep, fern-lined Preston Gorge, this striking cascade offers impressive views and a sense of wildness without the need for a long or difficult walk.

Also sometimes referred to as Delaney’s Falls, Preston Falls is clearly signposted and well set up for visitors wanting a short, scenic stop in Tasmania’s north-west.

A Waterfall in a Forested Gorge

Preston Falls is formed where Preston Creek drops approximately 25 metres into the narrow gorge below. The surrounding Blackwood forest adds to the atmosphere, with tall trees and dense undergrowth creating a cool, shaded setting that feels wonderfully secluded. The sound of rushing water echoing through the gorge makes this a particularly peaceful place to pause and take in the scenery.

The Walk to Preston Falls

Access to Preston Falls is straightforward, making it suitable for most visitors.

From the small car park, a well-constructed path and stairs lead down around 200 metres through the forest. The track crosses Preston Creek before arriving at the viewing platform, offering glimpses of the gorge along the way. While the walk is short, the stairs add a little effort, so sturdy footwear is recommended.

The Viewing Platform

The enclosed viewing platform sits right on the edge of the cliff, providing excellent and safe views over Preston Gorge and straight across to the waterfall. From here, you can truly appreciate the height of the falls and the depth of the gorge below.

Directions to Preston Falls

Preston Falls is located approximately 25 kilometres south of Ulverstone.

From Ulverstone, drive along Lovett Street (B17) for around 2.7 kilometres, then take a slight right onto Preston Road (B17). Continue along Preston Road, then turn right onto Raymond Road (C127). After approximately 350 metres, you’ll see the sign for Preston Falls and the small car parking area.
