The Willows Reserve Campground Review – Murray River Camping

The Willows Reserve is a peaceful riverside campground set along the banks of the Murray River, just outside the small town of Wahgunyah in north-east Victoria. Shady, spacious and beautifully maintained, it’s a popular spot for camping, swimming, fishing and simply relaxing by the river.

The campground is located at the end of Short Street and is only around 600 metres from Wahgunyah’s town centre, making it easy to pop into town while still enjoying a quiet bush setting. Wahgunyah itself is approximately 300 kilometres from Melbourne.

Camping Areas & Amenities

Access to The Willows Reserve is via a sealed road, making it suitable for caravans, motorhomes and campervans. The camping surface is mostly gravel, with grassy areas closer to the river and scattered throughout the campground.

There are only a limited number of riverfront sites, but plenty of additional camping spots set back from the water and along the internal road. We were lucky enough to secure one of the flat riverfront sites, which offered lovely views and easy river access.

The campground is well shaded, with plenty of mature trees providing protection from the sun throughout the day. We stayed at the end of September and found it to be quiet and relaxed, with plenty of space between campers.

The Willows Reserve is managed by a local committee who clearly take pride in maintaining and upgrading the grounds. This is a donation-based campground, with a donation box located along the main track. If you don’t carry cash, there are details provided for direct deposit.

Facilities include:

  • Flushing toilet near the entrance

  • Several town water taps

  • Picnic tables and BBQs in the day-use area

Important Information

  • The Willows is dog-friendly, keep your dogs on a lead and clean up after them.

  • Fires are allowed as long as there is no Fire Ban.

  • The camping spots are easily accessible for motorhomes.

  • We had good Telstra mobile coverage when we stayed.

  • A Flushing Toilet is available.

  • Town water is available.

  • No Rubbish bins - please take your rubbish with you.

  • There is a 7-day limit for camping.

Wahgunyah & Corowa Town Centre

The Wahgunyah Town Centre has a Fish and Chip Shop, Service Station and Bottleshop. It’s a short drive or you can walk over the bridge to Corowa in New South Wales, which has supermarkets, cafes, hotels, butcher shops and plenty of other shops to browse in.

Rutherglen Wine Region

On our way to The Willows Reserve, we stopped in nearby Rutherglen — a historic wine-growing region located just 10 kilometres from Wahgunyah. Rutherglen is world-famous for its fortified wines, particularly Muscats. We visited Stanton & Killeen for a wine tasting and picked up a bottle of their beautiful Muscat, which later inspired one of our favourite campground meals.

That evening, we cooked up sweet, sticky Muscat Glazed Ribs in the Weber right by the river.

A Peaceful Murray River Campground Close to Town

The Willows Reserve is a relaxed, well-maintained riverside campground that’s easy to access and close to town, yet still feels peaceful and spacious. With shady sites, Murray River views, good facilities and a donation-based system that helps support ongoing upkeep, it’s a great option for caravans, motorhomes and campers looking for an easy, low-stress stay.

Add in the nearby towns of Wahgunyah, Corowa and Rutherglen — plus the chance to enjoy good food and wine by the river — and The Willows Reserve is a campground we’d happily return to.
