A Walk Steeped in History

The walk is named after the Aboriginal people who lived in this area at the time of European settlement in the early 19th century. As you follow the track, you’re walking through a landscape that has long been significant to both Aboriginal culture and Tasmania’s early colonial history.

The walk begins at Waterloo Beach, the site of Swansea’s first European settlement and military garrison, established in 1827. Information boards along the way help bring the area’s stories to life as you wander beside the sea.

Coastal Scenery and Birdlife

This gentle coastal track hugs the shoreline, offering uninterrupted views across the bay to the granite peaks of The Hazards, the Freycinet Peninsula and Schouten Island. On calm days, the water sparkles, and it’s easy to see why this stretch of coastline has been admired for generations.

The track also passes through a shearwater (muttonbird) breeding area. During the summer months, these remarkable migratory birds can often be seen returning to their burrows at dusk after feeding at sea — a special experience if you time your walk just right.

The Loontitetermairrelehoiner Walk is one of Tasmania’s 60 Great Short Walks.

The walk starts from Waterloo Beach at the end of Jetty Road in Swansea and follows the coastline along the Loontitetermairrelehoiner Track. After around 1 kilometre, the track reaches Schouten Beach. From here, you can either turn around and return the same way or continue back into town via the quiet streets of Swansea.

Several seats are positioned along the track, making it easy to stop, rest and soak up the coastal views. Interpretive signs along the way share information about local birdlife and the area’s history.

Getting to Swansea

Swansea is located on Tasmania’s east coast and is approximately a two-hour drive from Hobart via the Tasman Highway (A3). It’s a similar distance from Launceston via National Highway 1.
